Found this strange plastic object in my hotel room in Pakistan… and I had absolutely no idea what it was. Turns out, it’s a simple little tool used to thread a nala (string belt) through the waistband of shalwar trousers. A nala is the cord or drawstring traditionally used to tighten and secure the shalwar, the loose-fitting trousers worn as part of a shalwar kameez. The cord runs through a channel around the waistband, but getting it through that entire channel can be a pain. That’s where this long plastic tool comes in. You attach the nala to it, push the tool through the waistband channel, work it all the way around, and pull the nala through with it. Such a normal everyday object in Pakistan and completely baffling when you find one in a hotel room with absolutely no context. Would you have known what this was?
