I’m standing in Mohenjo-daro, one of the most incredible archaeological sites in Pakistan and the remains of a huge city built around 5,000 years ago in the Indus Valley. Mohenjo-daro was part of the ancient Indus Civilisation, which flourished across parts of modern-day Pakistan and India. At its height, this was a remarkably organised urban centre, with carefully planned streets, brick buildings, wells, bathing areas and an elaborate drainage and sanitation system. One of the most famous structures here is the Great Bath, a large public water tank built from fired brick and waterproofed with bitumen. Archaeologists still debate exactly how it was used, but it clearly played an important role in the city. And what's really mind-blowing is that the people who lived here were doing all of this thousands of years before the Roman Empire, and around the same era as the great pyramids of Egypt. The city was rediscovered in the early 20th century, with major excavations beginning in the 1920s. Today, only a portion of the ancient settlement has been excavated, meaning there is still so much we don't know about the people who lived here. Mohenjo-daro is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but the ruins face serious preservation challenges, particularly from salt and water damage. Standing here in person is completely surreal. You're literally walking through the remains of a city that existed thousands of years before the countries and borders we know today.
