I spotted this bright green powder being sold on the street in Pakistan and had to ask what it was. It turned out to be naswar, a traditional form of smokeless tobacco that's commonly used in parts of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Central Asia. Users place a small amount under their lip or inside their cheek, where the nicotine is absorbed. Although it's inexpensive and widely available, naswar is not safe. Like other smokeless tobacco products, it contains nicotine, is addictive, and is associated with serious health risks, including an increased risk of cancers of the mouth and throat.
