Currently Playing: What 18¢ Gets You in Pakistan

I found this special chole chaat being made right here at Mohenjo Daro, topped with a delicious red imli chutney. And it cost me just Rs. 50 Pakistani rupees, around 18 US cents. Vegetarian food definitely exists in Pakistan, but it can be harder to find than in India. Pakistan's food culture has a much stronger tradition of eating meat, particularly chicken, mutton and beef, while vegetarian dishes are often based around lentils, vegetables, chickpeas and other pulses. India is also a country of meat eaters, but vegetarianism has a much stronger cultural and religious presence. Hindu, Jain and Sikh traditions have all contributed to India's long-standing vegetarian food culture. In fact, around 4 in 10 Indian adults describe themselves as vegetarian, while many more avoid particular meats or don't eat meat on certain days. So finding a plate of chole chaat here in Mohenjo Daro was a pretty good discovery. And yup, it was delicious.
