Deep in rural Sindh lies the massive Kot Diji Fort. Built by the Talpur dynasty between 1785 and 1795, this architectural marvel sits high atop a limestone hill, keeping watch over the landscape. The most fascinating detail is the defensive design of the gates. They were built to be elephant proof. If a charging elephant were to strike the gate, the massive iron spikes lining the wood would injure the animal, forcing it to retreat and preventing further damage to the structure. Reaching this place is an adventure of its own. The route takes you past quiet villages, winding irrigation canals, and endless date palm plantations, a world away from the busy cities. Standing at the main entrance, you can still feel the weight of the history and the immense effort it took to construct this stronghold over two centuries ago.
