Currently Playing: The Curious F-82 Twin Mustang Made The First Kills Of The Korean War

The F-82 Twin Mustang was developed in the closing stages of the Second World War as an escort for long-ranged B-29 raids on Japan. Arriving too late for service, it languished until the need for an interim night fighter to take over from the P-61 Black Widow emerged. Although far from the perfect night fighter it was the right aircraft at the right time when North Korea invaded the South in June 1950. This video delves into one of the more fascinating aircraft of the early Cold War. Quick note: the naming conventions for US fighters changed in 1947 so that 'Pursuit' aircraft became 'Fighter' aircraft. I therefore switch at approximately the right time from P-82 to F-82. Apologies, however, if there are occasions on which I get it wrong! Main Sources: "Images Of War: The North American F-82 Twin Mustang" by Alan C. Carey is an exceptional book but both out of print and expensive to buy. If you are really interested in the aircraft it is, however, worth the money in my view. "F-82 Twin Mustang In Action" by Larry Davis is a compact volume but a good read if you can pick it up
