I purchased this beautiful Drexel Accolade from a high school classmate along with the lowboy version, which I refinished a few months ago. I am participating in an Instragram challenge called “Into the Woods” which requires us to choose a piece of furniture, strip it to bare wood and refinish it any way we want, just not painted. Stain, oils, waxes and paint washes are all fine, just no solid paint. So, I chose to strip this piece down and after sanding for what seemed like days, which was ACTUALLY several days, I got it to bare wood. I then made a change to an Accolade Dresser that I’ve been dying to do! Every Accolade I’ve refinished in the past just felt like it needed a new base. So this time, I’m making a new one! I removed the base and built a new Solid Oak Base, changing the base height from 2.5” to 6.5”. This completely updates the look of the piece and makes it a more appropriate height overall. The original height seemed a little low for me. I have filmed a complete tutorial on building this base. You can see it HERE: https://youtu.be/Iwde7lGNat8 I then mixed up a custom tan paint wash using a custom blend of several paints, then diluted with 1 part paint and 4 parts water. Brushed on the paint, wiped off awith a microfiber towel nd allowed to dry. I then sprayed multiple layers of topcoat. The hardware was cleaned and refreshed using the “hardware soup” method. Vinegar and water, boil for 15 minutes, then scrub with bar keepers friend and steel wool. The original hardware is solid brass and shined up beautifully!
