Giving these handmade vintage nightstands a new life! These poor nightstands were in desperate need of a makeover. Lots of dents, deep gouges and I could just scrape the finish off with my fingernails. They are handmade and vary both in size and height. The routered edges are all slightly different and the turned legs are all different sizes. This one is a challenge! But I LOVE them!! They were the perfect size and style for my guest bedroom. So, when I saw them on Marketplace, I had to have them! They are very old and constructed out of cabinet grade plywood, so they are sturdy, but that also means, the woodgrain is nothing special. There are sections that are lighter wood and some that are darker. Giving these new life will be so fun since I am keeping these! I stripped them down using many techniques. First stripper, then acetone, then carbide scraper and sanding. Lots and lots of sanding. Sanding with my surfprep, orbital sander and by hand using contour blocks. Whew! Once I took them down to bare wood, it was time for stain. I wanted a DARK stain. So after applying a pre-stain conditioner. I used my favorite Dark Walnut by Saman and let the color saturate in by not wiping it back. The color is exactly what I wanted and it covers up all the variations in the wood while keeping the grain visible, perfect! After several layers of topcoat, sanding in between each coat, they are ready for the final touches. Drawer liners and the most amazing hardware! I also had custom glass cut for the tops so I don’t have to worry about guests setting anything on them while visiting. I hope you love these little beauties as much as I do!
