Currently Playing: Anna’s Story Broke Me… The Last Caretaker North Bastion New Update ( Part 3 )

In this The Last Caretaker North Bastion episode, we finally reach the laboratory—and this turns into one of the saddest quests I have experienced in the game. After powering up North Bastion, I enter the laboratory and discover Anna’s reconstruction unit. Four response modules are still installed, but the remaining modules are scattered throughout the facility, which means we have to explore almost every section of North Bastion to restore her. So the search begins. I go through meeting rooms, laboratories, family areas, lower levels, hidden passages, infected sections, and rooms filled with enemies while looking for the missing Leadership, Empathy, Wisdom, Adaptability, and other response modules. North Bastion continues to prove how massive it really is. There are hidden entrances, locked doors, ventilation routes, strange infrastructure, new environmental details, and entire areas that are easy to miss if you only follow the obvious path. Some of the modules are hidden behind enemies and secret routes, while others are sitting in rooms that tell more of the story of what happened here. Eventually, we recover all of the missing modules and bring them back to Anna’s reconstruction unit. And then the tone of the entire episode changes. Once Anna is reconstructed, we finally understand more about the voice that has been traveling with us. She remembers pieces of herself, but not everything. She remembers someone holding her hand. She asks what snow sounds like when you walk through it. She wonders what lies beyond the door. And worst of all, she does not want to be left alone. After hundreds of hours hearing this voice inside the caretaker’s head, suddenly she is standing there in front of us as something much more fragile and human than I expected. There is even a small hologram of Dolly, the sheep that stayed beside Anna during her treatment. At that point, I start desperately looking for some way to take Anna with me. I try using the drone, hoping there is some way to capture or preserve her reconstruction so she does not have to remain alone inside the frozen facility. It does not work. This episode started as another exploration run through North Bastion and ended with psychological damage. The Last Caretaker keeps surprising me with how dark its story can become underneath all of the survival crafting, ship building, strange experiments, and resource systems.
