The Newcomers were Memphis natives that were originally formed in 1969 as a quartet. After 1971 however, only one original Newcomer was left, Bertram Brown, the brother of the Mad Lads group member, William Brown. Producer Allen Jones recruited two new singers, Terry Bartlett and William Sumlin, to join Brown and form a trio as the Newcomers updated group. They released several singles on various Stax Record labels from that point forward until 1974 when Stax's financial troubles started impacting the release schedule of all the artists on the roster. Betcha Can't Guess Who, was among the final songs recorded by the Newcomers in 1974 but wasn't released until it appeared on a 2005 cd compilation. It was well worth the wait to hear this great ballad from one of the underrated groups at Stax, the Newcomers!
