At the height of the male duo era, The Soul Twins', Mr. Independent, is tough to top. Hal and Harold Degraffenreid were actually birth twins who moved from Burlington, NC to Detroit as teenagers and sang in church choirs. They signed a recording contract with Karen Records in 1966 and released several singles that didn't sell much. In 1969, Mr. Independent was leased to Houston based, Back Beat Records for national distribution, which finally got the twins some recognition. Later recordings by the pair would be under the name Gas And The Funk Factory in the 1970's. Mr. Independent remains their one shining moment and it's truly spectacular!
