In this video Sam Shamoun debates a Mormon in a live debate hosted by Brian Davila, and it opens with the Mormon handing out a printed list of what the Trinity requires, such as consubstantiality and divine simplicity, and arguing that if any one piece falls the whole doctrine collapses. Sam answers that many Trinitarians don’t hold divine simplicity either, including Eastern Orthodox Christians and Catholics like Robert Sungenis, so it isn’t something every Trinitarian has to defend. The Mormon then explains his view that the Father, Son, and Spirit are three separate beings who are one in unity, and compares the Old Testament’s “Yahweh alone” language to a landlord who runs every utility. Sam pushes back that whoever is Yahweh is in a category no other god can reach, which means the three must share that same category. The debate ends on whether God the Father has a body, with the Mormon pointing to Genesis 5:2 and the image of God, and Sam responding that “image” in Genesis 1 includes both male and female, that Colossians 1:15 calls Christ the image of the invisible God, and that Paul defines the image as moral likeness in Ephesians 4:24 and Colossians 3:10.
