The College of Glycation is an educational video series dedicated to helping viewers understand one of the most critical and often overlooked processes in human biology: glycation. Led by Dr. Paul Reynolds, Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at Brigham Young University, this series explores how sugar interacts with proteins and fats in the body, forming harmful compounds called Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs). These compounds accelerate aging, contribute to chronic diseases, and play a key role in metabolic dysfunction. Each video is designed to break down complex topics into clear, practical insights. Whether you’re a healthcare professional, student, or simply someone seeking to improve your health, this series will give you a deeper understanding of the biological roots of inflammation, insulin resistance, and cellular damage—and what you can do to address them.

Topic Skinny fat vs. metabolically healthy obesity: why BMI cannot see ectopic fat, why a thin person can carry a heavier glycation burden than someone who weighs a hundred pounds more, and what to measure instead of the scale. Quick summary Two people walk into clinic. One has a BMI of 36. The other has a BMI of 22. The thin one may be the one with fat in the liver and muscle, fasting insulin twice what it should be, and a decade of accelerated glycation already running. BMI was built for populations, not patients. It cannot see where fat is stored or whether that fat is still doing its job. The failure mode almost nobody screens for is the metabolically obese normal-weight person — thin on the outside, fat on the inside. Liver fat, not belt size, is the cleaner marker of metabolic trouble. Metabolically healthy obesity is real and usually a waiting room: about half convert within a decade. Measure waist-to-height and keep it under 0.5. Add fasting insulin and a triglyceride-to-HDL ratio. Fasting glucose and A1c can look normal while peaks still glycate long-lived proteins. Skin autofluorescence can catch accumulated AGE burden the snapshot labs miss.
