College of Glycation

The College of Glycation is an educational video series dedicated to helping viewers understand one of the most critical and often overlooked processes in human biology: glycation. Led by Dr. Paul Reynolds, Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at Brigham Young University, this series explores how sugar interacts with proteins and fats in the body, forming harmful compounds called Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs). These compounds accelerate aging, contribute to chronic diseases, and play a key role in metabolic dysfunction. Each video is designed to break down complex topics into clear, practical insights. Whether you’re a healthcare professional, student, or simply someone seeking to improve your health, this series will give you a deeper understanding of the biological roots of inflammation, insulin resistance, and cellular damage—and what you can do to address them.

Topic Longevity interventions: which ones change actual tissue damage versus which ones only move a biomarker score — and why glycation on long-lived proteins is one of the few places we can measure the difference. Quick summary Most longevity studies answer one of two questions without saying which. Did the intervention reduce the damage, or did it change a number that estimates the damage? A blood-based aging clock can shift a few percent while every cross-linked protein stays exactly where it was. Glycation on long-lived proteins (collagen, elastin, lens crystallins) is structural damage you can measure directly. Caloric restriction in the CALERIE trial slowed one epigenetic clock by 2–3% and left others unchanged; the same clocks can disagree by years on identical samples. Rapamycin has strong late-life mouse data and a plausible autophagy mechanism for intracellular damage, but human evidence is thin. Metformin has a reasonable glucose-lowering case and an unfunded large trial. GLP-1 drugs have hard cardiovascular outcome data in people without diabetes and compress the post-meal glucose excursions that drive glycation. Exercise has the largest human effect size and attacks the substrate at every step. Skin autofluorescence reads years of accumulated AGEs in collagen and predicts diabetes, heart disease, and death independent of current glucose or A1c. The useful loop is a modifiable input (glycemic variability) and a measurable structural output, not a clock score.
