The Soviet Union is launching an amphibious invasion of Ascension Island, and Task Group 136.3 is the only thing standing in its way! In this episode of Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age, we continue our playthrough of the Crossing the Line '86 campaign with Mission 5: Wideawake. Following our costly engagement with Soviet commerce raiders off the coast of West Africa, Task Group 136.3 has been ordered south to defend the strategically important Ascension Island in the South Atlantic. A Soviet amphibious assault group carrying an estimated 600 naval infantry is approaching the island, intending to capture Wideawake Airfield. The invasion force consists of three landing ships escorted by powerful Soviet warships, including a Sovremenny-class destroyer, a Kresta II-class cruiser, and a Krivak II-class frigate. Our mission is simple: Destroy the Soviet landing ships before they reach the beaches! With USS Preble (DDG-46) leading our four-ship task group, we'll coordinate with American aircraft operating from Wideawake Airfield, including USAF F-15 Eagles, US Navy A-6 Intruders, and P-3C Orions. However, the Soviet invasion fleet isn't our only concern. A Kilo-class submarine and Tu-16 Badger bombers armed with anti-ship missiles threaten to turn this defensive operation into a disaster. After suffering heavy losses in our previous mission, can we stop the Soviet invasion without sacrificing more American warships?
