Currently Playing: Defending the GIUK Gap - Royal Navy Mod Pack Episode 3
In this video I play through the Defending the GIUK Gap mission in Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age. The scenario places the Kiev battle group on a breakout attempt through the GIUK Gap into the Atlantic, and the mission quickly becomes a test of British air warfare, antisubmarine warfare, and subsurface coordination under Cold War conditions.
The focus of this playthrough is exploring what the Royal Navy Mod Pack brings to the game, from ship selection and sensors to weapons employment and tactical limitations. I work through the engagement step by step, reacting to Soviet movements, managing contacts in challenging northern waters, and trying to contain the threat before it reaches open Atlantic sea lanes.
This is a full mission run with commentary, tactical decision-making, and first impressions of how the Royal Navy assets perform in Sea Power, set against a classic Cold War maritime interception scenario.

There's one hit. >> [music] >> Here comes a second one. Dead. >> [music] >> Hey everyone, it's Ryan 940 here. Today we're taking a look again at the defending the GIUK gap mission by Mr. Child. Requires the RN to play and this is the Kiev. We have to sink this aircraft carrier. Um We've actually got a track now. That's that's the one right there. And obviously we got some escorts here. We have been sailing quite a quite a distance to get to this intercept point where I think it's good enough for us to fire at the Kiev once they get within range. We'll be within 15 nautical miles. The Tigerfish torpedoes go like 21 Yeah, 21 nautical miles, so we'll be set to engage them. We If you've seen the other videos, we've we had a rough time. Started out good. We sunk the November class submarine here. And then we just withstood barrage after barrage of missiles and it resulted in the loss of four vessels here. In fact, now that we've got some more time I want to launch three of these empty Sea Kings and then we'll prep three more as empty so that they're ready to go rescue these guys. They're still They're still some some sailors still on the surface there. So we want to make sure we pick them all up. In the meantime, we've got some Sea Lynx helicopters here and uh this one dropping sonobuoys. Actually, this about time for these guys to resupply. I was wondering why he can't um he can't go home to anywhere and it's because his ship probably was sunk unfortunately, so uh we need to rebase him, but uh I don't think that this guy can rebase. He's out of fuel basically, so he can't get to any of the ships, so that's not Oh, maybe. Let's see. Oh, okay, that works. All right, cool. All right, so we're going to watch this stuff up here really closely cuz the it's almost game time. Fact, let's make sure we're not cavitating. Let's creep a little bit forward again. Oh, no, no, no, don't go that way. Okay, so we're we're underneath the layer, so that's good for us. Oops. All right, we got a lot of these guys we can send out here, so one will go to that guy. The other will go here. And then this guy will go here. Oh, actually, go here. They should They should not have a lot of uh people to pick up in these spots cuz we've already done a run in the previous video. And I I think there was only like one or two one or two life rafts to fly back to. So, those guys will handle that. Man, it was it was rough. So, everybody's sonars are still going. We We do have a submarine threat out there. Uh we've already killed a couple, so they're for sure in the area. Drop the sonobuoys that we we have on board. Keep clearing it out. Okay. Splendid is waiting. Whoop. Did we Okay. Getting paranoid now. I thought I thought I heard them say like torpedo in the water. Oof. Now, we We're after this guy. I think we just won the mission if we sink this thing. So, let's Let's go for gold. Courageous is on the way as well. All right. These guys are on site. Yep, so there's just one there. Dropping down the 20 ft. Pull his waypoint marker over there. Same with this guy. There's only one left there, so go down to 20 ft and then we'll pull your waypoint to that. Okay, I think that he's got everybody so go to Birmingham. There's probably a lot more over there. This guy has picked up everybody from here. That's good. Also go towards Birmingham. Oh, you need to lose your altitude and then Oh, there's actually quite a few over here so maybe come over here. He might need to help pick up some more. Okay. That guy went a little bit too far. That's the tricky part about this stuff here. Creep on in. Cool. Okay, he's picked up his survivors. He's full. Lifeboat two is going to come on over then. Yeah, looks like we got one more raft there. And then uh this guy is going to figure out how many It looks like we got maybe three or four rafts out over here. And we're all set. There we go. All right, come to a stop. Come to a stop. And they picked up some survivors. Are you full? No, you're not full yet. 20 26. Okay, Birmingham has uh left. There we go. Cool. Okay, so you can go to Birmingham, pick up the rest and I think we're all good. Oh boy, that was that was a lot. So I've uh never been in a shipwreck, thankfully. Um and we never really recovered anybody from the ship for search and rescue or anything like that. Uh we had a SAR swimmer and actually we had a couple SAR swimmers. When I used to do boardings and stuff when riding in the rib, we'd always have a SAR swimmer with us and they would uh kind of act dual purpose where they'd man the machine gun if we had it mounted on the the front part of the the rib. Uh and then they would jump in the water if something happened to us. And uh we've had I'm I do remember one time off the coast of San Diego that was uh we're doing like a comp 2X thing, so it's like the big exercise you kind of do before you go on deployment with the carrier, so everybody's working together and it's almost like uh just non-stop training scenarios and you're acting as if it's all real. Um and at some point I was on watch in sonar control and I was a supervisor and I was just listening on the net and out of nowhere like it's like 2 or 3 in the morning and there was a SH-60 that had gone down like 100 miles or or more from us. And I was amazed. I was like, "What the hell are they doing out there by themselves like so far away in the middle of the night?" Um and it was it was during the wintertime. So, the water stay time is not good like in the winter off the coast of San Diego. You might think of it as like a sunny uh warm climate, but San Diego in the wintertime, the water Pacific Ocean it gets cold. And um so, the water stay time was like, you know, 10 minutes or something. And it was they were so far away that there was really no There was like no way that any ship can get to them to save them, right? Uh thankfully, there was a Oh, did we get the pickup? I think we did. So, there shouldn't be any more Yeah, 010 distress beacons nearest 83 nautical miles. Hm. Oh, this must be the people that ejected. Oh, jeez. I don't know if we're going to go fishing for those guys cuz I have no idea where they could be. Um let's RTB this guy though. Yeah, so luckily, there was another helicopter with them. Once they went down, the other helicopter fished them all out really rapidly and and everybody lived. But uh that was nuts. We went over there like the next day. We had sailed there overnight cuz they wanted to see if there was like wreckage for us to recover. And I think all they found was one of the um the we call them cranials, but the the helmets that uh one of the aircrew had just floating around the water and some random bits of bits of aircraft, but uh I think the whole aircraft just was sunk as a whole. And it was nuts. And I think I would I was Was that Yeah, I'd been in for a while, so I'd already gone deployments and stuff and and aircraft do crash unfortunately. It's just the nature of it, you know. It's a dangerous job. So, you do see it. It's unfortunate when it happens, but it's always it's always really you're always super thankful when people don't get hurt or or aren't killed from that. I I got to say, people that fly helicopters at sea, they I just think they they got big balls cuz they uh you know, sometimes you're operating like 100 miles or more from your unit in the middle of the open ocean. Anything that happens, uh you're you can be by yourself, you know. It's not typical that you'd have a couple helicopters flying together. Uh it's only really possible cuz you're with the carrier, but uh if you're like a lone destroyer or a frigate, and they might have two helicopters embarked, they're usually not flying together. They usually send one out, and the other's either being repaired or or has become the hangar queen if the deployment's gone on long enough. Okay, so now that's happening. Let's speed this up. We just want to get Let's take a look. Let's go above the layer. Ooh, they're getting closer. Still going 14 knots, yep. See if they're using active sonar. If they're just passive, we might might get away with the sneaking some shots over. Want to get this refined so I kind of have a good understanding of where torps need to go. You know what? We can actually have War Spike come up this way and help clear this out. >> On station. Buoy away. Got some of these escort. That's what we're after. Ah, this is going to be good. Oh, they're at EMCON. That's pretty neat. They are at EMCON. Interesting. Okay, this guy's out of ASW torpedoes. That's fine or sonobuoys. Go ahead and launch that ASW helicopter. Oh, man, this is this is so good. I'm kind of thinking of like letting the if if they're not banging away on active, like have them just pass and shoot the shot at Kiev from the the back here. Cuz these are the escorts right now and and these two guys are the that's I think the tanker. Yeah. So, if we let these guys pass, right? Um we can shoot down this corner here to go for these guys. The problem is just the torpedo I think goes like 20 knots for its cruise speed or something. Kind of slow. Uh I mean, it speeds up I think towards the end when it's in the terminal phase where it's homing, but um these guys are already going 14 knots, so there's not a lot of overtake to be had. So, you can basically run out of fuel from the torpedo. Okay. A little bit longer. There we go. All right, so time to get to the business. So, we want to win, so we want to make sure we get a couple shots here. Uh let's do let's salvo two at this guy. All right, we've got three more that we can use. So. Let's fire actually Hmm. Yeah, let's go for it. Fire three. Woah, woah, woah. Why are they going so fast? Oh, they're too far, interesting. Thought they're well within range. >> 095 >> Mhm, it must be that they're um yeah, just that overtake. The current range that we're at is too too too large. That's fine. Uh we can just stop cuz we're more interested in just hitting the Kiev. If we hit the Kiev, that's good. Uh if we miss the opportunity, we got courageous speeding in here. So, that's also pretty good. >> Bearing 08 7 9 5 10 to course >> Okay, this is now going to be very dangerous. >> Cannon 1 all back emergency. Bearing 3 1 Bearing blank Bearing 3 1 Chop it up. Chop it up. Chop it up. Bearing 1 Cannon 5 Bearing 3 1 Cannon to course Bearing 1 1 5 Cannon to course 03 7 Cannon 5 >> Oh man, look at all those ASW torpedoes. They are throwing them everywhere. Okay, they've they've sped up now. They're shooting them along this direction here. >> Cannon to course 109 7 5 Cannon to course >> Looks like they're trying to somehow trying to turn around and come back up this way, so we'll intercept them. Uh and then the other one, courageous, obviously, is moving on in. >> Oh, this is great. They don't know what the hell's going on. Okay, so we want to slow down now to 1/3. Don't want to cavitate. And uh we want to come up to below the layer. Well, we might go above the layer. I'm not sure if there's a depth maximum for these torpedoes. And if there is, I don't know what it is, so um we'll have to get a little little closer here. Oh, boy. There's a lot of stuff going on. >> [laughter] >> Holy cow. Okay, now we're going to drop uh and it is hard to see these guys. Okay, fire two at the Kiev. Okay. We have three tubes ready, so we'll fire one at the one at the Udaloy. One at this guy. And then one down in this formation is gaggle of ships. Okay, all the torpedoes are out. We're not going to try to wire guide them cuz we're going to have to quickly run away. So, we'll we'll break the guidance. We'll go deep. Once we get deep, we'll speed up and get the hell out of there. Oh, this is This is a mess. Oh, that's really neat. They're recovering the Yak at the moment. Oh, what the hell is that? Oh. I thought I saw something fly by. Must be seeing At half to thirds, let's get the hell out of there. We'll kind of parallel it and we'll cut back into the attack. >> Earthquake, bearing 109. >> Courageous probably should slow down. Yeah, we're going way too fast for this. Don't cavitate. Torpedo inbound. What are they talking about? Oh, these are the counterfires, I think. Ooh, we got two that are looking pretty good for the Kiev. They are looking really good. Where she at? She's really close. There she is. Come on, baby. Oh, come on. Oops, sorry. I got the time compression on too much. Yes. Oh, what are those missiles? Oh, are they firing um Silas-type missiles? Yeah, they are. Come on, baby. Come on, please. Oh, this is good. Come on. No, are you turning with it? Yeah, maybe. Maybe. Yep, okay. Let's keep an eye on Splendid. All right, Splendid's doing good so far. Firing a lot of ASW torpedoes this direction for some reason. Oh, this is nice. She's turning right into this thing. Yes. Oh, oh, yeah. One more, one more. Mhm. The other one missed. What happened there? Yeah, I don't know what happened. Oh, hello. Okay, so keeps turning around. Uh I don't know why that fired and I I did that. I did not intend to do that. Okay. We're going to We're getting the Kiev. This is good. All right. So, she's getting sandwiched now between these two submarines. So, I want to have the escorts be hit. And then we'll do a salvo two towards the key from this direction. I'm going to do one more at the cannon. Then one more at the cashen. Okay, and then we'll let Splendid close some more. Salvo two. Okay, this guy should go deep. Man, it's a lot to Oh, boy. Okay, that's good. They're firing torpedoes down that bearing at the moment. All right. They're starting to run from this spread. Splendid can come back up this way. They're they're pretty trapped, I think. Courageous can come back in. Oh, yeah. This is nice. See the ship wake right there. That's a good good good running. >> Engage track 7100. Fire away track 7100. Engage track 7097. >> Nice. >> Fire away track 70 >> Perfect. >> 095. Turn to course 066. >> We still have torpedoes. We got three headed towards the Kieve in this direction. Hopefully Udoloy eats a torpedo. >> 8.1 Whatever you like. Turn to course 079. >> Okay, we got >> Engage track >> opportunity to fire two at the Kieve this way. >> 98. 8.1 Whatever you like. Turn to course 079. >> Oh, they are firing their RBU's. Got one of the torpedoes, actually. There's a couple of ships that are going to die soon. There's Kresta. Oh, man. Three torpedoes surrounding her at the moment. Kiev's in sight. There's one hit. Here comes a second one. Dead. All right, Kiev's making 20 knots now. Only got that one hit there. Your lawyer is very close. >> 10, 1, 0, 0. 8, track 7. >> 1 away. >> Track into the state's confidence to cover there. >> It looks like maybe that this one's acquired the key. Ooh, she's shooting RBU's trying to defend herself. Can we make it? We got one engagement over here. >> Torpedo, torpedo, torpedo, bearing 5, 0. Torpedo, torpedo, torpedo, bearing 4. Torpedo, torpedo, torpedo, bearing 4, 0. >> Is that down here? No. Okay, that's going to hit and there's going to be another ship that gets hit. Probably in the background there. Ooh, nice. We did it. Oh, [laughter] man. Uh, we're not done though. Man, that was a beautiful model. Like so much detail on it. It's amazing. Oh, I thought this guy was totally going to get hit. Okay. Well, let's send it up back this way. What's happening with them? Are they They got hit and they're kind of screwed. >> 10 to go. Okay, let's do a single shot towards the Kashi. Then another single shot towards the carrier that's not really moving. There are torpedoes everywhere. This is insane. Oh. Don't want to miss this one. Ooh. Just a slaughter at this point. Okay, we want to get the Shchuka-class This guy we can probably use the straight running torpedoes here. Salvo two. Ah, they got hit. Damn. Now, they are maneuvering. Let's uh let's cease fire. Oh, looks like we'll get another one here. And two submarines just absolutely doing the demolishing of this Kiev battle group that they've they've had trying to run the straight or the GIUK gap. Something our aircraft probably Whoa, what's going on here? Is that another torpedo? What is that? Oh, it's an artifact. Oh, they kind of lost contact. All right. Oh, there we go. Now now she's got it. No? Oh, yeah. This was nuts. This was a long mission, too. I think we This is the third episode. And it's all come down to these submarines. Lost a submarine, that's too bad. But um all to the bottom there. He'll always run at 16 knots. See if we got it. This guy's actually going to be able to pick him up. Ooh, that one didn't uh track. Looks like it's picking up the Udaloy, though. Nope. All right. It's coming right at this guy. Right underneath. Oh, they already had had a previous hit on him. Oh, wow. Look at this. How embarrassing for the escort when you see that ship so close you just get robbed. They are running. No, we don't want it now. It's It's homing in on the wrong thing. >> [laughter] Been saved. Look at that. Just clobber. Okay, well, she's only got the uh straight running now. Let's see if we can actually say salvo four. Oh, you know what? Let's do a single shot. Let's just do it that way. No way. I'm I'm going to be really surprised if one of those things hits. Okay, that barely missed. That's impressive. That other one is not going to miss. No. I thought there was a second one here. Oh, they both missed. Okay. Okay, go ahead, flank. Chase this guy down. >> Ooh, they launched helicopters. Oh, man. Missed. Oh, man. Come on. Let's finish off all these ships. Damn. They're listing. They uh Oh, they're actually increasing speed. They were stuck at six for a while. Let's see if one of these torpedoes in the spread actually makes it. They're all slightly off from each other. Oh, this look good, actually. That V they look good. He's not changing course. Oh, this is If this hit, this is a great way to end this mission. Come on. One. See if we get some more. Two. Wow. Three. I think that was all of them. Yep. Wow. >> [laughter] >> Yes, that was freaking sick. Splendid. Absolutely putting in the work. Unfortunately, we lost the Courageous. Courageous got quite a few kills over here. Uh Splendid I think was the I actually maybe the Courageous had the most kills. I'm not sure. But uh now we've They just got these aircraft here that can't do anything. Um I wonder if they're Yaks or if they're helicopters, who knows. But we can send this guy very deep, get out of the area, go home. You have done your job. War spite is chilling. Yeah, so that was defending the GIUK Gap and we did it primarily with our submarines. Uh Couldn't have done it without submarines, I don't think. Just the aircraft um having to pick away at the cruisers and other escorts for the Kiev. Uh we I don't think we could have done it with the Sea Harriers. Obviously, we don't really have great amount of anti-ship missiles. We have some ships that have Exocets if they're still around. Yep, right there. Really limited in range, obviously. I think they go 20 something 28 nautical miles, 22. So, not not not too very good. No Harpoons or anything like that, so. Well, yeah, this was fun. We lost a lot of ships. More than I care to admit. But that's just how the salvos went for us when we received them from the enemy. Um I think what I maybe I could have done better was just have the ships all radiating after the first salvo, but I was convinced that they were only after this guy. Uh so I I kind of left them on. And uh yeah, it didn't work out very well and could have pushed my Harriers out further to hopefully get to the bombers. I didn't realize there would be bombers, but uh of course there were. And um those guys were able to get one of the ships I think Minerva I think eight six six or or eight anti-ship missiles all at once from raining down from like 60,000 ft. It wasn't a good ending for that ship. But at the end of day we picked them all up with our helicopters, which was really cool. Got to do a lot of sea search and rescue and recover them, so that was nice. And uh yeah, what a great finish. We killed the final running away Udaloy with Actually, it's kind of curious to see where the hits were. 1 2 Uh and then yeah, the whole stern had a bunch of hits. Ha. So, she took a few torpedoes on the sides there and she was still going. Uh but it was those three there that that did her in. Yeah, Splendid did it with the uh Mark H torpedoes, which are straight running torpedoes and um thankfully Udaloy was straight running away. >> [laughter] >> And this so that worked out pretty well. Yeah, if you have any uh questions or comments, leave them down below and I'll get to them as soon as possible. See you in the next one. Bye. >> [music] [music] [music] >> Bye.
