Currently Playing: Back to the Somalia Coast — A Destroyer Sailor Continues ‘Ghost Recon’ | Sea Power Pt. 2
In this playthrough of Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age, we are playing through a user created mission called Ghost Recon. I was really excited to see this after a viewer recommended it. I've sailed in this region in the Navy roughly around the time that this mission is set in and it was awesome to share some stories from that time period in my life.

I'll do that with a smoke that thing. >> [laughter] >> Um if we're doing a gunnery exercise, we would have to help fill up the uh killer tomato. Everyone, it's Ryan 1940 here. Today we're taking a look at Ghost Recon. This is the second episode of made this mission's made by vanilla. It's got a lot of add-ons in it and uh right now we've got some pirates trying to take over this cargo vessel here. Uh they have asked for help. There's uh another one here as well. And uh this is one of the ships in our group. We are in charge of uh international coalition that is tasked to protect the free and safe passage of merchant shipping between the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea, and then off the coast of uh Africa here going into the Indian Ocean. So, this is a part of the Euro mod, I believe. Uh so, we've got an actual OHP with the correct uh Sea Whiz type gun that they use in the Spanish Navy. Uh and we are on-site, so we can go ahead and engage these pirate vessels at will. So, let's go ahead and take them out with the trusty 76 mm the Mark 75 gun. Close range, this is going to be beautiful. There we go. I was going to say the gun rate is really slow, but now it's picking up. Ooh. Now we're landing. Oh, that's so sweet. All right. We'll wait till they're uh they're stopped. Uh >> [laughter] >> there's a ton of head num right now. Ooh, there we go. Nice. Uh let's go ahead and take this guy. Yeah, let's go there. Well within range. Go ahead and got the director on him. These guys don't have their uh air search on. See that from their perspective. Oh, that's That is a crazy scary sight. Damn. Yeah, a couple of 76 mils here >> [laughter] >> you're you're not having a good time anymore. All right, I think she is She's not dead. Oh my gosh. All right, we got to see what is going on across the All right, so there's one more pirate ship here. We got the Chinese ships um This one, the type 52 destroyers made by C-base 11, I think their name is. And then we've got a type 54. Uh so the the Chinese would also, especially back then um cooperatively work in the area against like counter piracy uh missions because global trade is important to everybody. And so it's very important to keep the sea lanes open. Uh so they're here and they're on our side, so we get to control them. Uh they've already taken out two of these boats, so they're going to take out one more here with the 100 mil. Going pretty slow, so we can engage them really easily. And I said this in the other video, but the freaking model is beautiful. Like look at the details in this thing. You can see the the bulkhead doors, um the forecastle is just probably the best I've seen. It's just an amazing level of detail on this ship. Looks just It looks so good. All right, the pirates are fleeing. Thank you, Gabe. So, that must have been for this guy, yeah. So, we got that taken care of. Um they will continue steaming in this frigate. Yeah, so previously we have engaged a lot of technicals uh while our soldiers from our special operations group were um running after an HVT, a high-value targets. They have depart They departed from the uh our task force earlier here at LHD 7 from the Iwo Jima. Uh these ships here are part of the US Navy expanded mod. So, we also have the Mahan, which is hauling ass over here just to do naval gunfire support in case they need it. So, we'll get them within range of the coastline and they can fire off uh It's telling a story in the previous one about uh picking up and rescuing a bunch of people off of a dow that broke down around here when I was really in the Navy. And um the It's really neat that this thing has the J-bar davit that we actually were hoisting the people up on the port side here. Uh this is a really good model. I love it. And they even got this right. I've seen uh in some of the other DDGs or Arleigh Burke mods, um the uh Mark 32 launchers were faced the wrong way. They were facing aft. This is the aft end here. Uh they they face They're supposed to face forward like that. So, it's a great job on that the person who made this. Uh and I was on a flight one. This is a flight two. It's a little different, but um I think visually they're pretty much the same. Uh like the type one, they didn't have a hangar, so they just had the flight deck here. Um I don't think we had this kind of thing. We just had a We called it the slewing arm david, which was just just crane thing. And both the boats I think face forward cuz uh that's how you basically put them down in the water. Uh there's there's like no way you would drop that boat like that, and it's just too much of a waste of time to rotate it around to put it down, so it's just aligned forward. But that's a minor detail, doesn't really matter, actually. Yeah, good-looking ship. Um so yeah, I'm excited. We're going to try and hopefully we can do some gunfire support, naval gunfire support. I think that's awesome. Uh what else do we got along here? What are the are the Chinese ships Okay, the Chinese ships are still engaging this guy. Uh this cloud bug thing in the smoke. I don't know what triggers it. It's like go so long without having that bug, and then then it just pops in. It's kind of annoying. That looks gorgeous. So I haven't really played that much with uh mods, but recently I've been on a mod kick. I think before this video is going to come out which you'll have seen the uh Royal Navy mod that I was playing doing the defense of the GIUK Gap. I'm excited for UK units officially in the game. It's going to be sweet. All right, so they're going to take care of that ship, no problem. Um Take a look around, see if we got any pirate stuff. Uh these guys kind of look sus over here. Yeah, you know Oh, why is there fire over here? Hmm, interesting. So, we need to launch a P-3. Maybe we should launch P-3. Yeah, we'll do that. I think we'll just fly the P-3 out this way, identify these guys, and should be good. Just trying to see where that P-3 is. Oh, there's coming out of the hangar. Okay, cool. It's a cool mission. Got like an international coalition, which is pretty sweet. Japanese P-3s, we've got um some Chinese ships, Spanish uh navy vessel. All right, we've got our other aircraft just loitering. Uh you'll know very embarrassingly we shot down our own helicopter in the previous video next to this dirtbag. He had his uh He had two AIM-120s, and we did like a 160 nautical mile shot if I was calculating that correctly, and I obviously didn't think that was possible. Uh and yet it did happen, so there's that, but uh this is a mod, so I'm not going to blame that on the game or anything, and not necessarily the mod's fault, too, cuz there's probably some disconnect there. I think cuz uh this is actually the first time I'm playing with the new update to the public um public version that's non-beta, where there's some more kinematic stuff and I think they even showcase that now with the weapons against targets. Yeah, you get this kinematic range and sensor range. Really neat. Yep. Uh this F-15E is really good. It's made by um I think a Ding Tool, I think is the name. Uh I really like it the way it looks cuz it just it looks like it's official artwork of the game. Like this unit belongs in the game if the game was uh centered on this timeline. Uh this mission actually, even though it says '91 up in the corner, this is set to be like 2012 and it's uh about the time period that I was in the Navy uh over here on doing stuff around the coastline here. Uh so yeah, talked about the Somali thing where we were rescuing the people. Well, um that was probably one of the most effed up things that I saw in the Navy cuz uh I they you know, they made me be like a security guard basically. I had I had OC spray and expandable baton in my pocket. But that was like for crowd control cuz I didn't know if people were going to come on board and like if they're going to get rowdy or not. Um but I didn't have to do anything like that and basically I was just trying to help the I think we had four or five people on board on the forecastle. And um these were like skin and bone people like you see in the commercials where they ask you to send money. Um and seeing that was just was pretty shocking and then on top of that, I felt really bad because um uh you know, these guys were like they were kids. They were 14, 15, you know. They were not much younger much younger than me cuz I think I was like 19 or 20 or something in that that time period. And uh yeah, we were giving them IVs to get them hydrated, but we had to do it in a really controlled manner because we didn't want them to go into shock cuz they you know they're so dehydrated and you can't just let somebody gorge out on like drinking water and you know they can go into shock and pass away from that. Uh so I remember the one of the things that I still remember to this day really clearly, which was pretty nuts, was um the Let's double check. Okay, so all these guys are good. These guys can speed up on their patrol. Go to standard. Yeah, the um All right, what do we got here? Jupiter one. Okay. That's cool. Yeah, so they were uh the temperature outside, I mean this was like in the summertime off the coast there off off Somalia. And it had to be like 110 or 120 degrees, something like that. It was It was pretty hot. And I remember them getting IVs hooked into them and and it was hard cuz they were so dehydrated. Obviously, you have collapsed veins when you're dehydrated. Um but they eventually got them in and I remember these These IVs like were not cold or anything, just room temperature. Uh but they were so skinny that they were um and it was such a big temperature change to the those people and they were because they were so skinny uh it drip like dramatically made them feel super cold to the point where they were like asking for blankets to stay warm and we're like, "No, man. Um you know, we're trying We're trying to get you to cool down a little bit cuz you've you're dehydrated and you're overheating. Um so they were in some discomfort and um um I remember them asking for water and but we're hydrating through through the IVs and so we can really just give them like a sip of water to get it on their mouth and make them feel that sensation but we couldn't let them like drink it down like crazy cuz we were really afraid that they would just get sick from that and go into shock. Uh, cuz they were they were pretty close to passing away which wild. Um and then the worst part was that uh, I said this in the previous video that the way that Yemen was back then it wasn't uh, kind of in disarray but it was like you know, I think they had a king or something back then. Uh, they had a they had a functioning government and they they had a UN refugee camp there. So, if basically you crossed over from Somalia and you made it to Yemen they wouldn't turn you back. You were allowed to stay at the refugee camp. And so that's what these people were trying to do to get over there. Um so we had this dow that we rescued but the French plane thought it was like a plane crash cuz it looked so bad. And they come out and uh, I guess big navy told our CO that we couldn't tow them cuz the boat didn't There was still a lot of people on the boat. I think there was like 70 people or something. And uh, they didn't have a working engine. They couldn't get the engine working. Uh, so the we thought that we were just be tasked to like tow them to Yemen. Um, but we couldn't do that for whatever reason. It wasn't allowed or something. I don't know. I don't know what the reasoning was but we were told to not do that. And we were told to bring them back to Somalia. And I I just felt really bad for them cuz it's like dude, these people went through so much suffering to try and get away. And now we're going to take them back to the the the that they were trying to leave. The most insane thing also on top of all this was uh when we brought them back I remember I was on a DDG kind of like Mahan. And I was on the uh the forward like 50 cal mount and there's I think there were like two there was like yeah I think these are the skid plates of where you put skid plates up and the gun mount would be here and here. But I think there was also gun up forward but I was on um where was I? I was either on the port one or I was actually on the one all the way forward. Um but I remember we were towing them so they were we gave them like food and water so they were all good after that and a lot of people donated like their their their civilian liberty clothes to these people. Uh so they had fresh clothes and stuff and um we were towing them back into Somalian waters uh Somali waters and then a a boat that had like was basically like a sea-going tug that was really decrepit and rusty and broken down. It just had spray painted on the side Somali Coast Guard or something like that. I remember seeing that. And then there were people walking around top side with like AK-47s and RPGs and stuff and like the bandoliers of ammo just look crazy look like a Call of Duty game. And um yeah I was on the 50 cal forward so I was just tasked to not point my gun at them but just watch them and if then if they did something crazy then just light them up. Um but they it was obviously it was like some warlord's boat. And yeah we had to turn them over in in Somali waters and then just leave. And uh I remember while we were while this was done we were kind of moving leaving the area or or starting to sail away. I was just keeping watch on those the the boat because that was my job. And um they We have to be careful here. They were um I could see the people on the Coast Guard boat these I don't know whether if they're like militia or something like motioning for all the men to get off the the boat the dow. Um and then Yeah, where's the dow? Yeah, so it didn't have a sail or anything. It was a motor motorboat dow. Um but they were taking all the men off and the men looked like they were just like oh what's going on now? Kind of thing like they didn't look like they were happy. And uh they took them all and I think they brought them inside and then the women and kids were just left on the dow. And then the you know, eventually they went over the horizon I couldn't see them anymore, but then eventually after that I kind of see like smoke coming up from the distance. I don't know like what the hell that was about, but we couldn't go back in there cuz we weren't we had diplomatic clearance just to like drop these people off and that was it. So That was uh my first deployment and that was when I was like, well, the world's pretty up. Uh and that just stuck with me and when you come home from something like that when you get off deployment um that was one of the harder things for me was uh making the adjustment of um you see crap like that and then you come home and somebody's like being rude to the to the worker at the Starbucks cuz their Starbucks orders got jacked up or something and they're just going off on them. It's like you have no idea how good you have it in this country to have like security not only with like uh um just like having a police force around and having a like a working government and levels of government and um but you have food security and you have uh uh water security and sewage and stuff like that in your home. Um, not saying everybody's life is like that in the United States, but uh, the person bitching at the Starbucks clerk probably has all that and some more. And that kind of stuff uh, really just uh, I had a hard time adjusting to that and it really took me many years after I got out to kind of make uh, peace with that. Like, you know, obviously you can't expect people that haven't seen that first hand to to just know to not take it for granted, right? Um, and I do think other people that have seen stuff like that, I think they probably feel the same frustration when they get home from deployment. And also sometimes it's really boring when you do crazy stuff on deployment and then you get home and you're just like, you're back to normal going to stores and stuff and uh, there's benefits too. I mean, you get to eat as much you want, you get to shower, um, like uh, take as long as a shower you want versus uh, on the ship you got to be quick about it, that kind of thing, but anyways. Uh, we are Oh, we're at EMCOM. We don't want to be at EMCOM. We got boats out here. We want to identify some boats. There's probably another one over there. We want to see if these are these are pirate boats. That's what I suspected. So, that's a pirate boat and that's a pirate boat and we have some ASMs here. I've never fired these before, but we're going to do it. Sweet. Oh, we have like the mid range or something. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I think these guys go like 20 miles or some 27 miles, so. A part of the new update that came out recently. Well, I say recently when I'm when I'm playing this. I don't know when this video's going to come out, but this is this will probably be like a couple months after the after the uh, video finally releases to the public, but you can actually put in the see the flight profile and stuff, which is really, really cool. So, let's say we're going to fire at mid-range. So, it looks like we're going to fire like 7 nautical miles uh and we're at uh 300 ft. So, we can see what the depending on the seconds, where it's going to be. So, this can help you time your shots cuz you can see after 38 seconds we'll reach the target. 2 3 I won't count it up, but uh yeah, so we should see the hit in like 20 seconds. That's pretty cool. This thing flies low as hell. 15 ft, wow. Well, this is cool, too. It just shows you the height that it's cruising at. So, it's got active radar homing, so we don't need to keep flying at this guy. We can Oh, boy. Nice. Yeah. Yeah, goodbye. And I think these might be pirate ships, so we'll take a look. Always suspect. Yeah, piracy got so bad for a while over in this region. I remember um they couldn't they couldn't they couldn't prosecute these people, right? You would what they would end up doing is um they would uh board them with the VBSS team, give them a stop or something. Um and a lot of them were using like skiffs, so they they're not like um these boats in the game here. I think it's just cuz of a we don't have skiffs in the game, but uh you can imagine like a uh open kind of canoe type boat or I don't know, it's hard to describe, actually. It's an open boat with a bunch of outboards on it to go fast so that they can board these uh merchant vessels, right? And what they would end up doing after we boarded them is uh obviously take their weapons away and they would take their um take their outboards away and just like throw them in the water basically uh or confiscate them and then they would uh give them only enough fuel and a compass bearing to go back to shore uh to keep them from trying to continue on their piracy in the short term. Um but it just I mean you couldn't really stop it because the problem was like Somalia had just been pillaged because they were a people that were you know, part of their economy was about coastal fishing and stuff and that's how a lot of those locals along the coast made their their living. All right. They have the HVT. They're heading out of the AO. Make sure Outlaw 25 makes it out of the AO. Okay, let's go find him now. All right. Well, let's before we do that, let's go fly these overfly these guys. Holy moly. What's going on over here? All right. These guys have to make it out alive. Ooh, looks like Mahan is going to get in. All right. Okay. They need to get out of here alive. A lot of bad stuff over there. Mahan, ooh, you know what we should do is uh that's an Azrock. We want uh T-Lams. There we go. One, two, three, four. What a beautiful ship. Oh, these two freaking hit. Yeah, too close. Okay, we're not we're going to Okay, don't do that. Uh we're going to use our gun. No, what? You can't use the Oh. I I hit Mark 54, but it is this gun. 127. All right. It looks like Outlaw is going to be just safe. That's perfectly all right. Let's get these guys going in the right direction here. Ooh, here we go. I'm going to hit. Oh, that's so sick. >> [laughter] >> My hands over there in the corner in the background. Dude, that is just how like ships look in the off the coast. Off in the the haze. That's a lot of flight time. Ooh. I just saw the puff of smoke over there. There he goes, another shot. Here we go. You know what? My hand doesn't need to be hauling ass anymore. They can slow down. Go to 1/3. >> I think that's Outlaw heading back to the amphib that is somewhere out there. Or is that Outlaw? One of those is. Come on, baby. Ooh, yes. That was close. Always make fun of the gunner's mates for not being able to hit hit anything. >> [laughter] >> We used to have this uh killer tomato and um the sonar guys at least though when I was on the DDG I was on, we had we were like cuz we were part of weapons department, we had to help out. So, if we were doing like a gunnery exercise, I'll do that with a smoke that thing. Um if we were doing a gunnery exercise, we would have to help fill up the uh killer tomato. That's interesting. Is that feeding this guy? Hm. Interesting. Won't comment on that, but let's fire at another target. Not use the Mark 54 torpedo this time. Yeah, so we would have to go on the flight deck and we would have to fill it up with air, but it also needed to be filled up with some water uh because we didn't um if you just filled it up with air, it would just fly along with the wind, right? So, uh we'd fill it up with some water to help balance it down on the water uh and then throw it over the side very simply and then we'd drive away and then shoot at it with the uh 5-in Well, what was funny about that was um we would do it and then the gunners mates would light it try to light it up with the 5-in and then it just wouldn't work. Uh they'd miss all the time. And then we were joking we were making fun of them. And then they um It's an interesting course change here. Eventually they said, "Well, we're not hitting it because we're not getting good radar reflections off the target." And so they made us like this the other times we were doing it with they made us like wrap the thing in tin foil. And of course that didn't help. They were still just as bad. Just poor shots. Uh But yeah, luckily we never had to really use that thing in in anger. I think yeah, recently one of the I think the Spruances maybe they shot their 5-in into the uh engine room of an Iranian cargo vessel container vessel. I'm sure the gunners mates there had a massive hard-on doing that being able to shoot that gun in operationally. Okay. These guys are like zigzagging all over. It's interesting. Okay, and Outlaw 2-5 is almost back home. Oh, I just got to get him to the X-fill circle here. All right, you can fly higher now. You don't have to go so low where you can almost crash into the water. Ah, it's so cool looking. See him shooting off. I wonder if Iwo Jima can see the uh No, it's just so hazy you can't really see out there. Yeah. You always see a lot of these uh sort of big LHDs and LHAs and stuff off the coast of uh San Diego like near Camp Pendleton. They're kind of off in the distance. See them through the haze on the horizon there. Ooh, got them. That's a little technical. Oh, I need to pay attention cuz yep, that's what I thought. Um I suspected there were pirate boats out here, so need to make sure that we didn't get smoked by their guns and shot get our P-3 shot down. Um here we can take off and use use the F-15s. Go destroy those boats really quickly. Uh these guys, that technical still being shot at by my hand. We probably work over uh L'Astrolabe. I don't want to risk the um Harriers. They don't have any Mavericks or anything, unfortunately. All right, let's get those F-15Es up. All right, HVT is secured. Okay. All right, well uh oh, never mind. >> [laughter] >> Yeah, one Cobra destroyed by friendly fire. Uh looks like protect the merchant vessels from pirates, check. Provide air support for special force team, check. Uh that's pretty cool. Um Do want to continue playing though. Really want to destroy these guys. Uh let's just have these guys use their small diameter bomb on that. And then you use your small diameter bomb on this. Jupiter will stand by over here. Yeah, this is a fun mission and I think it's uh really well um thought out how the uh ships are transiting. I really like this. There's obviously there's sea lanes or shipping lanes. Uh and it's cool that we get to go after the pirates and kind of discover them. They're not always being uh you know, I'm always being told where they're at. Sometimes you get those secured you get those calls over the net saying uh that a boat's being attacked, but you can go find those pairs like that on the on the open just by looking at their tracks. Ooh, all right, bombs away, I think. There we go. Oh, that is so cool. I didn't I haven't seen the small diameter bomb yet in the game. Obviously this is a mod, of course, cuz that's saying they didn't have these in the '80s. So this should be uh 34 mi away. This should be good enough for uh to kill the ship, I think. Those little small boats, I think. Where are those little boats at? Where are they at? Mhm. don't see them from here. All right, there's one boat there and there's one boat here. That is cool. Ooh, hoo, hoo. Yep. That's a kill. That's going to be another easy kill right there. Oh boy. Nice. All right, you can RTB, I think. It's a crap ton of small diameter bombs. That is neat. Oh, I guess we can use them to kill these things, but uh I'm not going to let the Air Force have all the fun. No way. I'll let these guys get some kills. Yeah, great model here. This is really cool. Love to play more missions with uh the Arleigh Burkes in them. So, if you know any, let me know. Either post a comment or if you're in my Discord, post it in the chat. Uh and then I can try and see if I can download it, get it working, and then play it on the channel. So, this was recommended by Technocarty, so thank them for this if you like this mission. Uh it's pretty neat. Got to share some real stories from my time in the area. Uh Yeah. Been all up around here. I think I told a story about going through this area. Uh how we had Yeah. I'm going to go back into it. It's just This video is going to be way too long. I think we got to end it soon, so Um I think that's it though. I mean, we're just shooting away with the Mahan now, so it's really not much else to do. What else have we got here? That's so cool seeing the destroyer in the background like that. I don't know if they'll RTB or Yeah, they will. Okay, cool. All right, cool. Anyways, that was Ghost Recon by Manila. There's a lot of little add-ons in this, but they're all in the workshop. So, if you try to download this mission, you can just say download all the associated add-ons, and it'll download it for you. Once you enable all of them in the game, then it should just work. Uh aside from I don't know if the MH-60 was supposed to be in the mission. It was um part of the download, and I have the mod downloaded, but I don't see any ships that have them like this guy doesn't have any MH-60s. The uh Mahan doesn't have any because they don't have any hangar. Uh these the uh Spanish frigate doesn't have them either. They've actually got no aircraft, so that makes me believe that they were supposed to have the MH-60 and for some reason it's not working. Uh I could be wrong, but that's just my guess. But yeah, this is a cool mission. We got to do some pirate interdicting and also some support of uh special operations group of forces uh taking out a high-value target. Um yeah, a lot of fun. If you have any questions or comments, leave them down below and I'll get to them as soon as possible and I'll see you in the next one. Bye. >> [music] [music] [music]
