Currently Playing: PCB Via vs. Trace Inductance: The Decoupling Capacitor Truth

Altium Develop gives your team real-time visibility into PCB designs, supply chain, and manufacturing — all in one connected platform: https://www.altium.com/develop?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=altium-academy-shorts&utm_content=pcb-via-vs-trace-inductance-the-decoupling-capacitor-truth Not all ground connections are created equal. When placing decoupling capacitors near ICs, many designers assume routing a trace to the ground pin is equivalent to dropping a via to the ground plane — but the inductance math tells a very different story. This short breaks down exactly why vias win when the power and ground pins are spaced apart, using real inductance-per-unit-length data pulled directly from the Layer Stack Manager. If you've ever taken design advice at face value without checking the numbers, this is a must-watch. The claim that "PCB traces generally have lower inductance than vias" is only true under a narrow condition — short traces — and this video shows you how to verify it yourself using Altium's built-in impedance calculator. Understanding this distinction can have a direct impact on the high-frequency performance of your decoupling strategy. 💡 Stay Connected: Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more in-depth tutorials and tips from @AltiumAcademy Share your thoughts and questions in the comments below! 👉 Subscribe for more: https://www.youtube.com/@AltiumAcademy?sub_confirmation=1 Don't forget to follow us on social to stay up-to-date on the latest Altium Academy content. 👉 Follow Altium on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@altiumdesigner 👉 Follow Altium on Twitter: https://twitter.com/altium 👉 Follow Altium on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/altium/ 👉 Follow Altium on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AltiumOfficial/ The Altium Academy is an online experience created to bring modern education to PCB Designers and Engineers all across the world.
