Altium Develop lets you design your HDI stackup and via spans in Altium Designer, then invite your fabricator to comment before the board is built: https://www.altium.com/develop?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=hdi-design&utm_content=via-stitching-in-hdi-pcb-design-microvias-buried-vias-bgas Via stitching in HDI PCB design takes more planning than a standard through-hole build, because your ground connections have to follow every microvia, buried core via, and through-hole transition a signal makes through the stackup. In this video, Zach Peterson walks through real BGA and wafer-level chip scale package pinouts, from a 56G optical PHY ball-out to an nRF54 microcontroller, and shows how sparse ground pins leave high-speed signals without a nearby return path. You'll see why stitching vias that stop at L1–L2 leave inner ground planes floating, how stacked and staggered microvias combine with buried core vias to reach the next ground plane, and why placing ground on layer 4 can remove the need for a buried via entirely. If you design fine-pitch BGA boards or high-speed HDI stackups, this is the via-span planning to do before routing, not after your final review. 📚 More from this Episode: - Ground Plane Connectivity in HDI PCBs Maintains Signal Integrity: https://resources.altium.com/p/ground-plane-connectivity-hdi-pcbs-maintains-signal-integrity - Creative Design with Buried Vias in Your Next PCB: https://resources.altium.com/pcb-design-blog/creative-design-with-buried-vias-in-your-next-hdi-pcb - What's Up with this MCU? | 1 Min PCB Design Review (Trevor Black's board): https://youtu.be/SbJ1GAYS5rA - HDI PCB Design Review: nRF52840 Via Sizing & Stack-Up Best Practices: https://youtu.be/MTXhCtOBYW 💡 Watch Next: - Via Stitching Explained: When Your PCB Actually Needs It: https://youtu.be/-_VsGf8qD3c - How to Use HDI Stackups during BGA Design: https://youtu.be/Q01okxqaV2Y - Understanding 2+n+2 Stackups in HDI Design: https://youtu.be/8sFIVD5fqfw - Microvia Design Rule: Stay Under 1:1 or Your Fab Says No: https://youtu.be/eddEpGdNsEs 💡 Stay Connected: Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more in-depth tutorials and tips from @AltiumAcademy Share your thoughts and questions in the comments below! 👉 Subscribe for more: https://www.youtube.com/@AltiumAcademy?sub_confirmation=1 Don't forget to follow us on social to stay up-to-date on the latest Altium Academy content. 👉 Follow Altium on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@altiumdesigner 👉 Follow Altium on Twitter: https://twitter.com/altium 👉 Follow Altium on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/altium/ 👉 Follow Altium on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AltiumOfficial/ The Altium Academy is an online experience created to bring modern education to PCB Designers and Engineers all across the world.
