Review stackups and return paths with your whole team in Altium Develop, where unlimited collaborators can see live design files and leave feedback: https://www.altium.com/develop?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=altium-academy-shorts&utm_content=signal-integrity-routing-over-a-power-plane-has-a-catch Signal integrity gets tricky when you route a digital trace over a power plane instead of a ground plane, and this Altium Academy Short explains the catch. The power plane does act as a return path, because capacitance between the signal-layer trace and the plane induces displacement current in the power layer. That current then has to couple back across the PCB stackup into the ground layer, through the capacitance between the power and ground planes. The key detail is that the trace-to-power-plane capacitive impedance is relatively low compared to the capacitive impedance between those two planes. Watch the full video to see what that means for your stackup and your return current. ▶ Watch the full video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lv8CZSc0o-c 💡 Watch Next: - Power Plane as a Return Path | Signal Integrity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lv8CZSc0o-c - High-Speed Return Paths in Altium Designer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYHA8HNkRrQ - Return Paths | Mixed Signal PCB Design: Part One: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iz57vDKdh4 - Stitching Via Deep Dive | PCB Layout: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtSnG-Tl8yM - Alternative 4-layer Boards for High Speed PCBs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4ncs8qfAiA 💡 Stay Connected: Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more in-depth tutorials and tips from @AltiumAcademy Share your thoughts and questions in the comments below! 👉 Subscribe for more: https://www.youtube.com/@AltiumAcademy?sub_confirmation=1 Don't forget to follow us on social to stay up-to-date on the latest Altium Academy content. 👉 Follow Altium on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@altiumdesigner 👉 Follow Altium on Twitter: https://twitter.com/altium 👉 Follow Altium on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/altium/ 👉 Follow Altium on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AltiumOfficial/ The Altium Academy is an online experience created to bring modern education to PCB Designers and Engineers all across the world.
