Currently Playing: 5 PCB Design Mistakes I Fixed in Under 10 Minutes

Altium Develop lets you invite your manufacturer to comment on your design while you're still in layout, so DFM mistakes like these get caught before you order boards: https://www.altium.com/develop?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=pcb-layout&utm_content=5-pcb-design-mistakes-i-fixed-in-under-10-minutes PCB design mistakes like the ones in this community-submitted drone board are easy to make and quick to fix, and Zach Peterson proves it by cleaning up the layout in Altium against a 10-minute clock. This follow-up to a 1 Min PCB Design Review walks through five fixes: shapes drawn on negative plane layers that remove copper instead of adding it, a missing Board Outline Clearance rule, thermal reliefs applied to vias and SMD pads that don't need them, unnecessary microvias and blind vias on a four-layer board, and design rules left at their default values. Two bonus tips cover a polygon pour connected to no net and a differential pair whose width and spacing miss its 90 ohm impedance profile. If you're newer to PCB layout or prepping a board for fabrication, you'll leave with a repeatable cleanup checklist and know exactly where each setting lives in the design rules and the stackup. When you're unsure what value to enter, pull it from your fabricator's published capabilities instead of trusting the defaults. 📚 More from this Episode: - The original review — One 150 mA Regulator Runs This Drone PCB | 1 Min PCB Design Review: https://youtube.com/shorts/GmX8HukiDAs (mentioned 0:17) 💡 Watch Next: - When to Apply Thermal Relief Pads to Your PCB: https://youtu.be/td1v-rW8U3I - How to Change Polygon Connect Styles in Altium Designer: https://youtu.be/KUzkHQANSzQ - Mechanically Drilled Blind & Buried Vias: PCB Design Rules Explained: https://youtu.be/cY0VKVCHGzg - Differential Impedance Deep Dive: https://youtu.be/u5Cgycpvq6Y - Six Basic Design Rules for Any PCB Design: https://youtu.be/TDXu3TmPE8Q 💡 Stay Connected: Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more in-depth tutorials and tips from @AltiumAcademy Share your thoughts and questions in the comments below! 👉 Subscribe for more: https://www.youtube.com/@AltiumAcademy?sub_confirmation=1 Don't forget to follow us on social to stay up-to-date on the latest Altium Academy content. 👉 Follow Altium on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@altiumdesigner 👉 Follow Altium on Twitter: https://twitter.com/altium 👉 Follow Altium on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/altium/ 👉 Follow Altium on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AltiumOfficial/ The Altium Academy is an online experience created to bring modern education to PCB Designers and Engineers all across the world.
