The true goal of meditation. Most seekers begin meditation with a simple assumption. There is "I", the meditator, and there is the object of meditation. A mantra, a deity, the breath, a sacred symbol. At the beginning these appear separate. But the sages tell us meditation is not meant to preserve this separation. It is meant to dissolve it. The true dawn is not the appearance of visions or mystical powers, but something far more profound. Gradually attention becomes so absorbed in the object that the ordinary sense of separation begins to fade. The meditator is no longer merely thinking about the object. He is becoming intimate with it. Imagine a river flowing toward the ocean. For a long distance it appears separate, with its own name and shape. Yet when it reaches the ocean, the distinction disappears. The river does not lose itself. It discovers its greater identity. The goal is not to create unity, but to discover the unity that was always present. This is Spanda Karika Verse 31.
