The secret between waking and dreaming. These verses are not primarily about acquiring powers. They are about understanding who is truly dreaming, perceiving and creating experience. When the yogi becomes established in recognition, his individual will begins to align with the universal will. The verses use the symbolic language of the sun and moon, Soma and Surya, the dual currents through which experience moves. Ordinarily we think "I am looking through these eyes." The yogi recognizes it is consciousness itself looking through them. The body, mind and senses become instruments. The experiencer is Shiva. The same consciousness continues in the dream state. The forms change, the awareness does not. Between waking and dreaming there is a gap, a doorway, a luminous interval where the usual structures of mind loosen and the ever-present reality becomes easier to recognize. Think of a movie screen. One film ends, another begins, the scenes change completely, yet the screen remains unchanged. Waking is one film, dreaming another. The screen is consciousness. This is Spanda Karika Verses 33 and 34.
