The shift from "I am this" to "I am all". In the previous verses, Kallata described extraordinary manifestations of Spanda. Clarity arises, intentions become effective, inner strength appears where weakness once existed. Naturally a question arises. Where do these powers come from? Verse 39 answers not by pointing to the powers, but to their foundation, the Adhishthana, the underlying support. Consider a lamp. We admire the light, but the light depends on electricity. Similarly, we admire intelligence, creativity, intuition and courage, but these are not self-existing. They arise from a deeper source. That source is consciousness. That source is Shiva. Notice the movement here. Most people live as though consciousness belongs to the body. Kashmir Shaivism reverses the equation. The body belongs to consciousness. The yogi gradually discovers, I am not inside awareness. Everything is appearing inside awareness. The masters caution us not to become fascinated by powers. The power is not the destination. The foundation is. The wave discovers the ocean, and having discovered the ocean, it understands every wave. This is Spanda Karika Verse 39.
