Why deep sleep is not enlightenment? This verse introduces the Great Space, Mahavyoman. Not the vastness of the outer sky, but the infinite expanse of consciousness in which all experience arises and disappears. Into this space the sun and moon dissolve, the dual movements of our being, activity and rest, the outward and the inward. Duality loses its hold. From the outside, the yogi appears completely still. To an observer he may look like a person in deep sleep. But then comes the most important word in the verse. Anavritah. Not covered, not veiled. An ordinary person in deep sleep is free from mental activity, but awareness is veiled. There is peace with no recognition of it. The awakened yogi enters a silence that outwardly resembles sleep, yet inwardly awareness remains fully awake. Silence alone is not liberation. Luminous silence is liberation. This is Spanda Karika Verse 25.
