Seeing Shiva in every experience. The verse begins with a remarkable declaration. There is no state in thought, word or meaning where Shiva is absent. Whenever we think, whenever we speak, whenever we understand, consciousness is already present. Without it, no thought could arise, no word could be spoken, no meaning could be understood. Yet we rarely notice the silent awareness that makes all of this possible. It is like becoming fascinated by the pictures on a screen while forgetting the screen itself. The verse then reveals a deeper insight. The experiencer himself appears as the experienced. We usually divide life into two. I am here, the world is there. Consider a dream. Within it there is a dreamer, people, mountains, rivers, all appearing separate. Yet on waking we discover they arose from one consciousness. The awakened sage sees waking life the same way. Not that the world is unreal, but that both knower and known are expressions of the same consciousness. The wave that observes another wave is still only water. This is Spanda Karika Verse 29.
