English Translation: If you have not sung the praises of the Lord, you have wasted your life in vain. Says Nanak: Meditate on God, O man, in the way that the fish loves water. Why are you engrossed in sensual pleasures and not detached even for a moment? Says Nanak: Contemplate on God, O man, so that death’s noose does not fall on you. Your youth has passed away in vain and old age has overcome your body. Says Nanak: Dwell on God, O man; your life is fleeting. You have become old and you do not understand that death is overtaking you. Says Nanak: You are insane, why don’t you remember and meditate on God? Your wealth, spouse, and all the possessions that you claim as your own – none of these will go with you in the end. O Nanak, know this to be true. He is the saving grace of sinners, the destroyer of fear, the Master of the masterless. Says Nanak: Realize and know him who is always with you. You do not enshrine affection for the One who has given you a human body and riches. Says Nanak: O crazy man, why do you waver now like a wretched person? He has bestowed on you life, wealth, property, happiness and beautiful mansions; Says Nanak: Listen, O my self – why don’t you contemplate the Lord? The Lord is the giver of all comforts. Without him, there is none other. Says Nanak: Listen, O my soul, meditating on him, salvation is obtained. Remember Him, O my friend; by contemplating Him, one is emancipated. Says Nanak: Listen, O mortal, your age is constantly slipping away.. O clever and wise man, know that your body is made up of five elements. Be sure, O Nanak, that you will blend with Him from whom you have sprung. The saints proclaim: the venerable Lord abides in all hearts. Says Nanak: Contemplate him, O my soul, so that you may cross the terrible world-ocean. This shabad is published by Radha Soami Satsang Beas.
