These shabads are hymns or spiritual poems written by saints and mystics from different spiritual traditions of the Indian subcontinent. English Translation: Bow down to the Guru   and offer him your salutations a million times more. The insect does not know the greatness of the bhring   yet the bhring transforms the lowly insect into itself. Know that the Guru and the Lord are one;   always remain absorbed in his Shabd. If you find a true Guru, submit yourself wholly in devotion   and contemplate on him every moment. One who surrenders to the Guru’s will and always remains under his command –   such a disciple has nothing to fear in the three worlds, declares Kabir. Blind are those   who look upon the Guru as a mere human being;   highly miserable in this world are they,   and in the next they suffer Yama’s noose. Those who consider the Guru to be a mere human being and charnamrit as plain water   will go straight to hell and will be born again and again as wretched dogs. They are blind indeed, says Kabir,   who do not consider the Guru as the Lord;   if the Lord is annoyed, one can take refuge in the Guru,   but if the Guru is displeased, there is no other refuge. The Guru is more exalted than the Lord –   reflect and realize this in your heart. Whoever does simran of the Lord   remains in this world   but one who does simran as instructed by the Guru   is transported across the ocean of existence. In the three worlds and the nine regions,   there is no one greater than the Guru. Even the Lord cannot act against the Guru’s will –   what the Guru wills, that alone will happen. Says Kabir: If the Lord is displeased,   one may seek refuge in the Guru’s feet,   but if you earn the Guru’s displeasure,   not even the Lord will come to your aid. One who follows the Guru’s orders unconditionally   and acts only within the Guru’s will,   says Kabir, he is saintly indeed   and free from the cycle of transmigration. I sacrifice myself to my Guru a million times, again and again;   from human, he made me divine and took no time to do so. If the whole earth were my paper, all trees my pen,   and the seas my ink, they would still not suffice to describe the glory of my Guru. One who surrenders to the Guru’s will and always remains under his command –   such a disciple has nothing to fear in the three worlds, declares Kabir. Should the Lord and my Guru appear together,   at whose feet should I prostrate myself? I sacrifice myself to my own Guru   for he is the one who revealed the Lord to me. Know that the Guru and the Lord are one;   always remain absorbed in his Shabd. If you find a true Guru,   submit yourself wholly in devotion and contemplate on him every moment. Even if the Guru resides a million miles away,   keep your attention engaged in him   so that, mounting the steed of Shabd,   the soul comes and goes in an instant. If the Guru resides in Benares   and the disciple by the sea far away,   not for a moment will he forget the Guru   if he harbours the qualities of a good devotee.
