English Translation: Those merchants have come, O mother, those merchants have come. They trade in gems; they call loudly to their customers. Rubies and ornaments are good companions, O mother; I thought I would take some with me. I heard the call; it came to me to buy some rubies. I would put them in my ears, and show them off to people. They will see that I have rubies and will be attracted to me. Finally, I went and stood before them, telling them what I desired: “O ruby men, I have come to buy rubies.” They displayed caskets full of rubies and I was filled with desire. All the rubies looked beautiful, one better than the other. “O ruby men, tell me, what is the price?” “If you have come to buy rubies, give up your head.” “I cannot bear the prick of a needle – how can I give you my head?” Disheartened, I returned home. The neighbours came to inquire: “You went to buy rubies, walking so confidently and proudly; what gem did you bring home?” “The rubies were heavy, I was weak, and I had only a token payment in my hem. Heavy rubies are priceless; I could not choose one.” I do not know how to buy cheap glass, but I went to purchase rubies. Without money and without knowing the intricacies of the deal, I failed. I looked sturdy when I went to buy rubies. The Lord, who was supposed to buy them and give them to me, ignored me. Picking up rubies, you have become thin. Who can decide what this means? When I asked them the price, the quote was high. I could not bear the prick of a needle, but they asked me for my head. Whoever goes to buy such precious merchandise has to pay for it with his life. Those merchants have come, O mother, those merchants have come. This shabad is published by Radha Soami Satsang Beas. You may visit our official website at: www.rssb.org
