These shabads are hymns or spiritual poems written by saints and mystics from different spiritual traditions of the Indian subcontinent. The shabads convey a deep message of truth and are sung with heartfelt devotion. They express the intense longing of the soul for union with the Lord. These songs of devotion are prayers that inspire the true seeker to turn inwards to contact the ultimate Truth – the inner divine music that reverberates within every being. English Translation: The virtuous attain the Truth by forsaking desire for vice. Their minds are dyed in the Guru’s Word, and on their tongues is love and affection for God. Without the true Guru, no one has attained God. Reflect on it in your mind and see. The filth of the manmukh is not washed off until one enshrines affection for the Guru’s Word. O my mind, walk in the way of the true Guru. Abide in your own home, drink Nectar, and attain the peace of the Lord’s presence. The impious one has no merit; she is not permitted to sit by the Beloved. Manmukh does not know God, and, being without virtue, is far removed from that Lord. Those who have recognised the true Lord remain imbued and filled with Truth. Those whose minds are pierced through with the Guru’s Word are received by the Lord. God Himself dyes one in His love and, through His Nam, unites him with Himself. The colour of those who are imbued by embracing love for the true Lord does not fade. The manmukh grow weary of wandering in four directions, but do not obtain understanding. Those with whom the true Guru unites meet and blend with the true Lord. I am tired of making many friends hoping that someone will eliminate my agony. By meeting my Beloved, my woes ended and I have attained union with the Word. The truthful person has a reputation for truth; he earns Truth and possesses its wealth. Having become virtuous, O Nanak, those who meet the true Guru do not separate again.
