I stumbled across a traditional snake charmer performing on Karachi’s main beach in Pakistan. Snake charming ("Sapera" in Hindi) has existed across South Asia for centuries, although today it’s becoming a dying art and is mostly performed for tourists and curious crowds. But after stopping to watch for the first time in my life… this performance definitely did not go how I expected. The cobra spent most of the show trying to attack the snake charmer rather than “dance”, while more and more people gathered around to watch - eventually even handing the snake to people in the crowd. Later, I sat down with the snake charmer himself to learn more about his life, how he catches these snakes, and the strange health problems he claims years of handling them have caused him. A lot of people will probably dislike seeing this. But it also raises an interesting question: is this really so different from the animal entertainment we still have in the West - things like circuses, marine parks, or crocodile wrestling?
