Located in the southeastern United States, Florida stretches between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico and is characterized by a warm subtropical and tropical climate, low elevation, and an extensive coastline. Much of Florida’s geography is shaped by wetlands, coral limestone, and barrier islands, with the Everglades representing one of the most distinctive ecosystems in North America. This physical setting has strongly influenced how cities developed and how roads were built, often following narrow strips of land suspended between open water and marshes. Miami stands as Florida’s primary gateway to the Caribbean and Latin America. Situated on the southeastern coast, it developed from a small settlement into a major metropolitan area thanks to its port, rail connections, and later its highway network. Miami’s urban fabric combines dense downtown districts, sprawling suburbs, and coastal neighborhoods facing Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic. The city is a critical starting point for long-distance travel in southern Florida, especially for journeys heading south toward the island chain that extends into the Straits of Florida. South of Miami begins one of the most distinctive road corridors in the United States: U.S. Route 1. This highway is the longest north–south road in the country, running from the Canadian border in Maine all the way to the southernmost point reachable by car in the continental United States. In Florida, US-1 takes on a particularly iconic role, as it becomes the only continuous road connection between the mainland and the Florida Keys. From the Miami area, the route passes through Homestead and Florida City, skirting the eastern edge of the Everglades before transitioning into the Overseas Highway. The Florida Keys are a coral and limestone archipelago extending southwest in a gentle arc for more than 100 miles. They are traditionally divided into Upper, Middle, and Lower Keys, each with its own character and settlement pattern. The islands are narrow and low-lying, often only a few meters above sea level, which makes the roadway a dominant visual and functional element of the landscape. In many sections, US-1 occupies the highest and most continuous strip of land, acting both as transportation infrastructure and as a protective spine against the surrounding waters. As US-1 leaves the mainland, it becomes the Overseas Highway, a sequence of bridges and causeways linking island after island. The road frequently runs parallel to older railway bridges built in the early twentieth century for the Florida East Coast Railway, remnants of which are still visible alongside the modern highway. Driving this stretch means alternating between land and water at short intervals, with long views across shallow turquoise seas, channels, and mangrove-lined shores. Traffic flows through small towns such as Key Largo, Islamorada, and Marathon, where the highway doubles as the main street, lined with marinas, motels, restaurants, and fishing docks. One of the most striking segments of the route is the series of long bridges that cross open water, culminating in the famous Seven Mile Bridge, which connects the Middle and Lower Keys. Here the sensation of driving over the ocean becomes especially pronounced, with uninterrupted water on both sides and the horizon stretching far beyond the roadway. The engineering of this section reflects the challenges of building durable infrastructure in a marine environment exposed to hurricanes, salt corrosion, and strong currents. At the southern end of the journey lies Key West, located on the last and westernmost major island of the chain. Historically significant as a port and naval base, Key West developed with a compact urban layout that contrasts with the linear form of the islands to the north. US-1 officially ends here, marking the conclusion of a route that has crossed an entire continent and terminated at the edge of the Caribbean.
