Sergeant Doom is going to be executed. He was always useful to the Imperium because he knew one thing better than anyone else: forward. Forward through mud, forward through gunfire, forward until the enemy broke. But an Ogryn who ignores Hatman’s order, wastes the battlefield advantage, loses weapons, position, shells, guns, and men — that is different. Doom’s failure forced Imperial forces to relocate resources to hold the Ogryn position before the enemy could break through. Many Ogryns died for nothing. Brum fell because Doom wanted forward when he should have listened. Now Doom sits in prison, waiting to hang by chain until dead. The Commissariat officers attached to Ogryn discipline debated whether he should simply be shot or made into an example. But the people who handle Ogryns cannot afford blind rigidity. Ogryns are too valuable, too loyal, and too easily wasted by men who do not understand them.
