Rope and the Lord is an Imperial Guard Space Marine ballad about four ordinary Guardsmen on patrol through a ruined war zone. Michael carries rope, as he always does. Holt jokes about it. Joss keeps watching the road. Tarn leads them forward until they find a wounded Space Marine lord slipping from a broken ledge. They try to pull him back by hand, but he is too heavy. Michael gets the rope around him, they run it over stone, and one by one Holt, Joss, and Tarn hang themselves down over the edge as living counterweights, using their own weight to pull the lord back up. This is a soft acoustic soldier folk ballad with Spanish-style nylon guitar, mournful oboe, and a single deep male vocal.
