A state witness has been decapitated with a stop sign, Luther McDonald is in custody, and Mac is going to save his dad's life. He is absolutely not going to save his dad's life. Mac and Charlie launch their investigation: Charlie practicing bird law with an empty briefcase, threatening witnesses who "have words in their lips," and visiting Luther at the prison where Luther makes it very clear that the last thing he needs is his son anywhere near this case. Meanwhile, Frank is in a tuxedo at the bar celebrating his upcoming death, Dennis becomes the voice of reason (a sign of how unhinged everyone else is), Bill Ponderosa wants to die on his terms and his family is fine with it, Maureen now looks like a cat and no one can stop her, and the one person who can actually crack this case is Bonnie Kelly — who knows more than anyone wanted to know about Luther McDonald and Eduardo Sanchez. The "Life Is Happy" shirt does more work than the entire gang. The post-reaction is a proper tribute to Bonnie Kelly, working woman, worldly woman, a woman who knows what she wants and is not shy about the details. Beyond that: the irony of Mac literally destroying his dad's chances of surviving prison by accident, Dennis being the sanest person in the room as a barometer for how dark this episode gets, Bill's ex-wife and kids being somehow worse than the gang, the Rickety Cricket and Frank-as-alibi theories both turning out wrong, whether you can actually take out a life insurance policy on a stranger, and how this episode fits into Season 10's unbroken hit streak.
