Two more Neo Geo Pocket games that Americans know better from their pixel-for-pixel color remakes (which shipped in relative abundance on Neo Geo Pocket Color, versus these games, which only appeared in America as direct-sale items—supposedly!). Renketsu Puzzle Tsunagete Pon! (Puzzle Link if you're nasty) brings a mostly-new approach to color-match puzzle action. Well. Shade-match. Color match would come later. And, being a trendy, hip, late ’90s kinda of portable experience, play funnels into a card-collecting and -trading experience. It's fine! Fun! A good time-waster! But the real gem here is the sports game. I don't like sports games, as you know! But it's a very good take on the sport, rich with details, beautifully animated, and featuring a large degree of automation to compensate for the small scale of the system and the complexity of the design. Best of all, it taps into the NES Baseball Stars ethos in a way that Baseball Stars on NGP did not by centering on a career mode and team-level customization with your game earnings. And it's packed with personality! It's super good! It almost makes me wish I liked sports games.
