[This cut of the episode removes a couple of errors caused my own misreading of the system's tech details.] This is not a game retrospective. It is about a game system. Even though there was a game system retrospective about a dozen episodes ago. Who knows why NEC spaced out the launch of the TurboGrafx-16 and the TurboGrafx CD by about five months! It seems like a weird choice in hindsight! Why not ship them together? Or space them a little further apart? But that's just the TurboGrafx experience in America: a bunch of neat stuff handled in a slightly inexplicable way. Hopefully, with this episode, I have properly conveyed just what a big deal the TurboGrafx CD was at the time of its debut. Or at least what a big deal it WOULD have been, had there been more awareness of it. At the same time, the Turbo CD undeniably arrived a little before its time; game design processes and tech hadn't really expanded to fully exploit the CD-ROM medium, and the manufacturing processes hadn't reached sufficient scale to make it economical (or, really, even affordable to the average consumer). NEC and Hudson were looking ahead to the future here, but it would take a while for everyone and everything else to catch up.
