Islamic Finance 101: How to Build Wealth as a Muslim | Hisham Abu Yusuf Full Episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BE_bOr0qMho&t=205s . Is wealth a blessing or a curse in Islam? Most Muslims have never been taught the full picture — and that gap in understanding is costing the Ummah dearly. In this talk, Sheikh Hisham Abu Yusuf breaks down the true Islamic perspective on building wealth, why poverty is NOT a sign of piety, and what the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ actually modeled when it came to money, trade, and financial independence. This is a call for Muslims to reclaim their dignity, their influence, and their role in shaping the world — through halal wealth building rooted in strong intention, hard work, and tawakkul in Allah. What you will learn in this video: Sheikh Hisham covers the two definitions of wealth: - The revealed Islamic definition (richness of the heart and contentment) and - The economic definition (ownership of assets, property, and businesses that generate real value). He dismantles two of the most dangerous misconceptions spreading through Muslim communities today: - The belief that the Prophet ﷺ was financially poor, and - The idea that poverty equals piety. Far from the truth. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was an experienced trader who traveled to the Levant, entered into business partnerships, owned land, generated rental income, and established waqf (endowments) for the sake of Allah. Eight or nine of the ten Sahabah promised Jannah were well-known traders and wealthy. Building halal wealth is not just permissible in Islam — it is virtuous. Three powerful reasons to build wealth as a Muslim: 1.The first is that wealth is influence. Those who control the wealth control the media, the algorithms, the political systems, and the direction of entire societies. The story of the Battle of Badr begins as an economic interception — the Prophet ﷺ understood that financial power is strategic power. Today, Muslims must stop being consumers of other people's narratives and start owning the platforms that shape public thought. 2. The second reason is independence. A Muslim who is financially independent cannot be bought or compromised. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged his companions to leave their children wealthier than they found them — to raise a generation that gives, not one that is always taking. 3. The third reason is civilization. Islam is a complete way of life — it is not just ritual worship. It builds societies, institutions, hospitals, schools, and legal systems. None of that is possible without wealth. The Waqf model — revenue-generating endowments that funded scholars, hospitals, and public services for over 1,300 years — is proof that Islam had a sophisticated, self-sustaining financial civilization long before modern economics was ever theorized. Practical steps for building wealth the Islamic way: Sheikh Hisham Abu Yusuf gives clear, grounded advice for young Muslims navigating the modern economy. He warns strongly against get-rich-quick schemes, cryptocurrency speculation, dropshipping shortcuts, and the false promises of online "wealth gurus" — reminding us that whatever is built quickly disappears quickly. Instead, he calls Muslims to develop hardcore, valuable skill sets — the kind that took mastery, mentorship, and years of apprenticeship to develop. Just as the Prophet ﷺ learned trade under his uncle Abu Talib through hands-on experience, and just as Abu Hanifa Rahimahullah was a master craftsman before becoming a scholar — Muslims must build expertise before they build wealth. Skill leads to value. Value leads to income. Income, when properly channeled with the right niyyah, leads to the building of the Ummah. He also emphasizes the importance of moving from employment to self-employment over time, embracing calculated risk through true tawakkul in Allah, and from day one — allocating a portion of every income toward sadaqah, waqf, savings, and long-term building.
