How to START the Islamic New Year Correctly | Hisham Abu Yusuf . In this powerful New Year khutbah, Ustadh Hisham Abu Yusuf takes us back to the most pivotal moment in Islamic history: the Hijrah of the Prophet ﷺ from Mecca to Medina. Two lonely men in a dark cave. Assassins at the entrance. The future of Islam hanging by a thread. In that moment of fear and despair, the Prophet ﷺ taught Abu Bakr (RA) a lesson for all time: never think Allah will abandon you. He has soldiers you cannot see. He has ways of protecting you that you cannot imagine. As we enter the Islamic New Year (Muharram), this khutbah calls us to reflect on the past year, assess our flaws, and make a commitment to serve Allah and build institutions for the future of Islam in our communities. The Prophet ﷺ arrived in Medina with nothing but built the masjid, the brotherhood, the first constitution in human history, and a free market – all in the face of uncertainty. In this video, you will learn: - The Hijrah Story: The Prophet ﷺ planned meticulously – hiring a guide, purchasing camels, choosing routes. But his most important decision was taking Abu Bakr (RA) as his companion. In the cave, when the search party was at the entrance, Abu Bakr was overcome with fear. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:40) - Allah's Invisible Support: A spider spun a web at the cave's entrance. Angels protected them. Allah's soldiers cannot be seen. Never think you are alone when you are working for His sake. - Two Types of People: Those who step up to serve Allah, and those who are "couch potatoes" – too comfortable, too lazy, unwilling to sacrifice. Many refused to migrate to Medina because they were cozy. Don't be one of them. - The Prophet's ﷺ Actions in Medina: He did not build his own house first. He built: The masjid – the spiritual center. The brotherhood between Muhajirun and Ansar. The first constitution in human history – a covenant between Muslims, Jews, Christians, and pagans. The free market (souk) for fair trade and commerce. - The Call to Action – Build the Medina Model Today: The Prophet ﷺ had a small number of companions, but each was ready to lift their sleeves. They built institutions. Today, we need the same: youth programs, mental health facilities, masajid, Islamic schools, mobile apps, educational centres. - One Man Made the Difference: Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr (RA) was sent to Medina to teach Islam. In one year, he converted the entire population. One person. One year. The whole city. - Don't Say "Somebody Else Will Do It": This is the poisonous mindset that kills communities. Not me – somebody else. Who is going to build the masjid? Who is going to change the perception of Muslims? Who is going to be a kind neighbour? Be that somebody. - New Year Reflection: Spend half an hour today reflecting on your mistakes, your flaws, what you can improve, and what you can do more for the sake of Allah – in your spirituality, your family, your community, and the institutions of Islam.
