Its interior is so vast that early survey teams could not map its boundaries with standard lighting, and entire prototype structures were eventually built inside the chamber without ever reaching the ceiling. When the surrounding region became difficult to measure, stabilize, or build upon, Keystone was chosen as the first fixed reference point of the network: a place where distance, weight, alignment, and structural form could be tested against stone that had remained unchanged long before human construction began. Engineers preserved the cavern’s sweeping arches and water-worn geometry, not as decoration, but because the earth had already shaped a structure strong enough to outlast everything placed within it.
