Puerto Rico Town By Town

Beginning in January of 2023, my wife Zoraida and I started visiting a different town in Puerto Rico every two weeks. That means that it will take us over 3 years to visit all 78 municipalities (taking into account unforeseen events such as climate and health issues. We started in the town of Carolina, going clockwise around the municipality of San Juan. Why didn't we cover San Juan (you might ask)? Because that's where Puerto Rico By GPS started, so we thought we could give it a rest and return in a near future as needed. As of June of 2025 we have covered 40 municipalities and the adventure continues.

Get Our Exclusive Guide: “10 MISTAKES FIRST-TIME PUERTO RICO VISITORS MAKE” here: https://accrm.com/s/4849 We wrap up our first week exploring the southwest corner of Puerto Rico in one of the island’s most historic towns: San Germán. Known as Puerto Rico’s second oldest city, San Germán is a place where deep history, quiet plazas, and powerful stories come together. If you enjoy slow travel, walkable towns, and meaningful places, this visit will surprise you. San Germán is the birthplace of Lola Rodríguez de Tió, one of the greatest Latin American poets of all time. She was also an early advocate for women’s rights, an abolitionist, and a fierce supporter of Puerto Rican independence. Her legacy is everywhere here, from museums to the very streets where she once walked. Our visit begins near the historic center, just steps from San Germán de Auxerre Parish, a stunning Baroque church overlooking the main square. Though under restoration during our visit, its beauty still shines through. We also explore Francisco Mariano Quiñones Square, a calm, tree-filled plaza perfect for slowing down and soaking in the atmosphere. From there, we walk to Plaza de los Próceres, one of the most peaceful spots in town. At its eastern end sits the legendary Porta Coeli Convent, the oldest church convent in Puerto Rico and the Western Hemisphere. Built in the early 1600s, it offers a rare look into the island’s earliest colonial past. San Germán is also known for its unique museums. We step inside Domínguez Pharmacy, the second licensed pharmacy in Puerto Rico and now a fascinating museum. Inside, you’ll find original tools, glass vessels, and stories that bring 19th-century medicine to life. Just across the street, the San Germán History Museum fills in the town’s rich political, cultural, and social past. We also visit the Casa Museo Aurelio Tió, located in Lola Rodríguez de Tió’s childhood home. This museum dives deep into her life, her poetry, and her role in Puerto Rico’s national identity, including her contribution to “La Borinqueña.” San Germán is surrounded by other towns, but it stands apart. It’s thoughtful. It’s historic. And, it rewards travelers who prefer to explore on their own, guided by curiosity—and a GPS.
