Puerto Rico Town By Town

Beginning in January of 2023, my wife Zoraida and I started visiting a different town in Puerto Rico every two weeks. That means that it will take us over 3 years to visit all 78 municipalities (taking into account unforeseen events such as climate and health issues. We started in the town of Carolina, going clockwise around the municipality of San Juan. Why didn't we cover San Juan (you might ask)? Because that's where Puerto Rico By GPS started, so we thought we could give it a rest and return in a near future as needed. As of June of 2025 we have covered 40 municipalities and the adventure continues.

It is known for fruit, culture, and one of the best engineering schools in the Caribbean. The city blends Spanish colonial style with a calm, small-town feel. If Old San Juan and Ponce had a slower cousin, this would be it. In this video, we explore Mayagüez at street level, without tours or time limits. Our visit starts in Plaza Colón, one of the most beautiful town squares in Puerto Rico. The square is framed by historic buildings that follow classic Spanish design. On the east side stands the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Cathedral, a landmark that dates back to the 1700s. On the west end is the elegant Casa Consistorial, or City Hall. We also share clear parking advice, because parking in Mayagüez can be tricky if you don’t know where to go. We stayed in Cabo Rojo at I Love Combate Rooms & Suites, which made visiting Mayagüez easy. From there, we explored the city’s cultural side. One highlight was the Pilar Defilló Museum, tied to the life of Pablo Casals, one of the world’s greatest cellists. His work helped shape Puerto Rico’s classical music scene. We also drove through the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez, known as RUM. Its engineering program is famous, and even NASA recruits students from here. We finish with a look at the coast, historic buildings, and daily life in Mayagüez. This city has far more to offer than most visitors expect. We only scratched the surface, but we share what matters most. This video is made for independent travelers who want real places, clear directions, and honest insight. If you plan to explore western Puerto Rico at your own pace, Mayagüez deserves a full day on your map. And of course, as in all our videos, every attraction includes the GPS coordinates for your convenience. ================= CHAPTERS 00:00 - Introduction 10:15 - Mayagüez Municipal Parking 10:42 - Christopher Columbus Square (Plaza Colón) 11:31 - Our Lady Of “Candelaria” Cathedral 11:57 - City Hall (Casa Consistorial) 16:03 - Pilar DeFilló Museum (Pablo Casals’ mother) 23:26 - Museum Hours and Phone Number 23:57 - University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez 25:04 - Franco’s Bakery 25:54 - U.S. Customs Building 26:13 - “Shorty” Castro Coastal Promenade 27:56 - Coming up ================= RELATED CONTENT Why I Do What I Do? — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jr0pHfFfMJM&t=66sæ La Vuelta Del Bobo”, A Traffic Jam That Puerto Ricans Actually Enjoy — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H434m-b9v7A&t=4s Does GPS Work In Puerto Rico?
