Beginning in January of 2023, my wife Zoraida and I started visiting a different town in Puerto Rico every two weeks. That means that it will take us over 3 years to visit all 78 municipalities (taking into account unforeseen events such as climate and health issues. We started in the town of Carolina, going clockwise around the municipality of San Juan. Why didn't we cover San Juan (you might ask)? Because that's where Puerto Rico By GPS started, so we thought we could give it a rest and return in a near future as needed. As of June of 2025 we have covered 40 municipalities and the adventure continues.

Ask where he was from and you’ll really go over their heads. But maybe it’s understandable. After all, Diplo was a Puerto Rican comedian from the early twentieth century. Albeit, the best in the Island’s history, according to most experts. Ask anyone about the town of “Naguabo Puerto Rico” and one of their immediate remarks is sure to be ‘el pueblo de los “enchumba’os”’. In Spanish that phrase means “the town of the “dripping wet”. And, while there’s no explanation set in stone for the weird moniker, there are several plausible ones. Naguabo sits on the southeast coast of the larger island of Puerto Rico as well as on the southeast quadrant of El Yunque National Rainforest. That puts the town square in the sight of the Atlantic Trade winds and their orographic effect. Naguabo is also crisscrossed by six rivers, including “Río Prieto”, “Río Icacos”, “Río Blanco”, “Río Cubuy”, “Río Sabana” and “Río Santiago”. These elements combine with an average yearly precipitation of 130+ cubic inches to make Naguabo one of the wettest municipalities in Puerto Rico. Add this to the fact that the area is prone to flooding and you’ll understand why the inhabitants of this lovely town would be called the “dripping wet”. Like it’s neighboring town Ceiba to the northeast, Naguabo’s economy used to be greatly dependant on the now closed Roosevelt Roads Naval Station. You can feel the void from the moment you arrive. The silence is deafening. There’s hardly anyone in the streets, many businesses have closed and economic activity is nil. Only a few elderly citizens were playing dominoes under a tree at the town square. Of course, we tried to do what we always do: visit the church, the square, places of interest and nearby beaches. But boy, did we strike out! So why did I make this video at all? Because it’s just as important to tell you about the great places as it is to tell you about the not so great ones.
