Curated by: Let the Quran Speak (115 videos)
Dr. Shabir Ally explains a commonly misunderstood Quranic verse 16:67, which mentions deriving "intoxicants and good provision" from dates and grapes. Some, including classical commentators and critics, have mistakenly taken this verse to suggest that alcohol is a blessing in Islam. However, Dr. Shabir clarifies that the verse must be read in context: it follows a verse highlighting the miraculous separation of pure milk from blood and excrement in cattle. Similarly, while fruits like dates and grapes offer beneficial provisions, they can also be used to produce intoxicants, which are not considered a blessing. The Quran consistently portrays alcohol negatively, noting its harms outweigh its benefits (2:219) and explicitly forbidding it (5:90). Subtly, the verse likens intoxicants to blood and excrement, which are unpleasant byproducts, while good provision parallels pure milk. Thus, the Quran does not in any way praise or legitimize the consumption of alcohol.
