Currently Playing: Is Muhammad the Last Prophet? | Quran 33:40 | Misunderstood Quranic Verse | Dr. Shabir Ally

The Quran 33:40 describes the Prophet Muhammad as the “seal of the prophets,” a phrase often misunderstood. Some reformers argued that this could mean Muhammad places a “seal of approval” on later prophets or that prophetic status might continue metaphorically through others, leading to sectarian claims about new prophets and even a symbolic “second coming” of Jesus. However, mainstream Sunni interpretation, based on the Quran, multiple hadith reports, and scholarly consensus, understands “seal” to mean completion: Muhammad is the final prophet, with no prophet after him. Whether read as "khatam" (seal) or "khatim" (the one who seals), Dr. Shabir Ally says the meaning is closure, not continuation, which makes later prophetic claims incompatible with the text and its established interpretation.
