Curated by: Let the Quran Speak (115 videos)
Dr. Shabir Ally explores the mysterious Quranic phrase “Over it are 19” from 74:27-30. It's a passage that has puzzled readers for centuries. It vividly describes Hell, called Saqar, and then mentions that “over it are 19,” prompting the question: what does this number mean? Classical scholars explained that it refers to 19 angels appointed as guardians over Hell, a view supported by the grammar of the verse, since the feminine pronoun “it” aligns with Jahannam (Hell). But in the 1960s, an Egyptian biochemist proposed a radical reinterpretation: claiming that “19” pointed to a hidden mathematical code running through the Quran, proving its divine origin. Though his findings drew attention, many of his calculations were later shown to be flawed, and his later claim to be a messenger of God caused mainstream Muslims to reject him. Still, Dr. Shabir notes that the number 19 continues to fascinate some Muslim researchers, who study numerical patterns in the Quran as subtle signs of its divine design.
