Therefore, to interpret the verse as describing Lot’s people as “the first” would contradict this anthropological understanding. Instead, Dr. Shabir suggests that the verse critiques the extremity of their actions, framing them as having gone beyond acceptable boundaries in a way that drew the attention and reproach of their prophet.
