Prophet Yusuf, known as Joseph in the Bible, was abandoned and left in a well before being rescued and sold into slavery in Egypt, where he served under Potiphar. Celebrated for his exceptional beauty, Yusuf attracted the advances of Potiphar’s wife, who repeatedly invited him to intimate relations. Yusuf consistently refused her. A central point of debate in the Quranic narrative in 12:24, which revolves around the interpretation of a conditional clause. Pickthall’s translation states that although she desired him, Yusuf would have desired her only if he had not witnessed the proof of his Lord, implying that his divine guidance prevented any illicit inclination. Some translators, like Asad, render the verse as if Yusuf might have been inclined toward her absent that intervention. Dr. Shabir explains that, when viewed in the broader narrative of Joseph’s life -- a story marked by trials, steadfast virtue, and divine intervention -- the more compelling interpretation is that Joseph never truly succumbed to temptation. He points to classical commentaries, notably by Imam Al-Razi, which argue that any suggestion of Joseph's desire contradicts his established righteousness and spiritual conditioning. Thus, within the context of the Quranic narrative, Joseph is affirmed as one of God's chosen servants, whose unwavering commitment to divine guidance precluded any engagement in illicit behaviour.
