Dr. Shabir Ally explores the identity of Khidr, the enigmatic figure mentioned in Surah 18:65 of the Quran, who imparts divine knowledge to Prophet Musa (Moses). Though the Quran refers to him only as “one of Our servants,” classical Islamic tradition names him Khidr and presents various theories about his nature. Some say he was a prophet, others a righteous man, a saint, or even an angel. Dr. Shabir leans toward the view that Khidr was an angel, arguing that only an angel could perform morally complex actions, like taking a life, without violating divine or worldly law, and that angels often appear to prophets in human form to deliver divine instruction. He notes that while this view is not widely emphasized in tafsir literature, it is supported by scholars like Maududi.
