The answer to this is, "it depends". It depends on several things. First, we have to understand that counting is a useful TOOL that we can use to manage fatigue, ensure adequate training intensity, and measure progress. But it is NOT necessary. In fact, many people truly hate counting and the sense of pressure that they feel it brings to an otherwise enjoyable workout experience. Others become obsessed with rep chasing. As long as you are training sufficiently hard enough, managing recovery, accumulating enough volume, and hitting the target musculature, you technically do not need to count reps. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and your goals.
